What are your thoughts or feelings on this song? Do you like it? Any opinions on what it's about?

Paint It Black

I see a red door
And I want it painted black
No colors anymore
I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by
Dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head
Until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars
And they're all painted black
With flowers and my love
Both never to come back
I see them turn their heads
Quickly look away
Like a newborn baby
It just happens every day

I look inside my self
See my heart is back
I see my red door
And I want it painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away
And not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up
When your whole world is black

No more will my green sea
Go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee
This thing happening to you
If I look hard enough
Into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me
Before the morning comes

Wanna see it painted
Painted it black
Love is gone

Love the Stones' and U2's version of it. It is about lost love and the absolute depression that sets in where normal things present in the world around us seem so repugnant that we want them blotted out because we are so sad and they remind us of happiness. At the end of the song the singer resolves to get his love back. What would the world be without Rock and Roll? Without U2 and the Stones? I wouldn't want to know. Songs like this are just so damn good! Guitars and drums rule!

I think so, too, Dori!

I reread what Dori had to say about this song and still really like it. I haven't listened to this song in a long while and I think I'm going to pull it out and give it a go again.

I like U2's version of this song better than the Stones original.
The Lyric is a brilliant illustration of a person sinking into Depression, living in that realm and not really wanting to pull out of it, and then in the end accepting the thing which triggered the depression and allowing themselves to go on living.

I love the line:

If I look hard enough
Into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me
Before the morning comes
