I will add to this message as time goes on so I will commence now by numbering the suggestions.
1: Scan and copy to your computer all documents of an official nature, this includes your own birth & marriage certificate.

2: Scan and copy to computer all thats ALL family photos, if it's too big to scan take a digital photo of it take a few photos including a photo of the back if possible it may have something written on it and enhancing with the computer may make it clear. for the same reason scan the back of photos as well.

3: Before you save them to disk make a list I use excell spreadsheet
a; photo number. (thats the number you have given it )
b:Who it is. (list everyone Left to right Back to front)
c:where it was taken. (sometimes all you can do is guess like the beach or a main street)
d:when it was taken. (work out how old some one is and go by that if you don't know but make sure you put approx)
e:who took it. ( professional :it's in a studio or Uncle Whatshisname as he is in one photo but not this one)
f:what sort of camera was used (professional or maybe you know it was pas box brownie)
f: who owned it originally

4: Add this list to the disk of photos and make 2 copies one for your self and one for some one to put away safely for you. (We have a fireproof safe just for disks and documents) there is no room for anything else.

5: photograph any items you have "Inherited" that belonged to the family and make a similar list to the photo list add a valuation if you have it, if you don't some times it is possible to attend something like an antiques fair and get an approx value, I did this but only took photos could not afford to damage the items, but dont just ask 1 person ask at every stand that seems appropriate, I have an item 1 valued at about "$200 if that" he said (then tried to buy it) another valuation of the same item was  $6000. quite a difference between them. The official value was $5500. but I cant replace it and I will never sell it I would have to be poor in spirit to do that.
Make 2 copies of this disk also.
To be continued
