Back in the 1700s Forresters and Stonemasons, and other trades, had their own Benevolent Society, and met together to raise funds for those in their trade who had perhaps been injured at work or a family member had died and they could not afford a funeral. Later they invited members in from other trades, and by this time they were known as a Lodge or an Ancient Order.
So we have today the Ancient Order of Forresters, commenced ENGLAND and traces its roots back to Robin of LOXLEY or Robin HOOD.

The FREEMASON's Lodge, "trace their beginning back to the Builders of KING SOLOMON's Temple but this is very doubtful," quote from Wikepedia. Commence ENGLAND.

I have found only one group was commenced not for a trade group or as a Benevolent Society.
The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffalo's (RAOB) commenced in ENGLAND and had nothing to do with the Buffalo Trade but by theatre stage hands annoyed at being locked out of the Actors' Society, and nothing to do with benevolence, but would drink and sing "bawdy" songs the worst of which was one about a Buffalo, so the name was born.

Some of this is off the subject but I hope it clears up a question.

Bleggy

I thought this was such an interesting piece of information, that it deserved to be posted on the GENERAL Board.

Certainly, my HIBBINS family in RUTLAND, ENGLAND were Stonemasons back in the 1600's and 1700's. Unfortunately, the Church and Parish Records of that time were destoryed in a fire - and this could be another way of trying to find information on them.

Thanks "Bleggy" for this most interesting information. I am sure many of our other Members will find it fascintating as well.

Regards,

I have a question in regards to this subject, in the Death Notice's in the 'SYDNEY Morning Herald' the year was 1918 of my g g grandfather there was a message that read:-  John KNIGHT Loyal BALMAIN Lodge No:15,  I U I OO F. The officers and brothers of the above lodge are kindly invited to attend the funeral of their late brother etc etc.

Reading this message made me inquisitive as to what was this lodge that my g g grandfather belonged too. Can anyone help me answer this question, or where can I find the information about the lodge itself.

BALMAIN is a suburb of SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.

thanking you

Hi "tothemax6",

Perhaps this might help you in your quest.

Independent Order of Odd Fellows

Level1/ 428 George St Sydney 2000

(02) 9221 4221

Also, there is some fascinating information on the link below:

The "Independent Order of Oddfellows" is a world wide Lodge. It appears that each LODGE keeps it's own records, and if you contact the SYDNEY address and phone number above, they may be able to assist you with your enquiry.

Regards,

I am sure you will find them helpful, all these Lodges were secret societies and the secrecy was strictly kept, but now it is possible to even ask and frequently get a copy of photos that most usually had taken on an annual basis, because none of the branches any longer employ staff it is best to find either the state head office or the country head office, where mostly they do employ staff.
The idea is if you think a relative was a member then the best thing is contact them and ask for any information, and do they have a photo.
I have found those I have contacted most helpful.

Thank you both very much for your reply BlueAAngel0703 and Bleggy. I will give your advise a go and contact the head office of the IOOF in Sydney.

I did not know where to start as I knew nothing about these societies.

Best regards,

joA
