Hi Everybody, Hopefully someone can help me with this. I have all my Family Tree in the free Brothers Keeper programme that I downloaded from their website. Can anyone tell me how I can save it to CD so I can send to other family members to install on their computers AND be able to read the info? thank you for any help. "anniepannie1000" |

Sorry Anniepannie, that posted before I had finished, and then Generate report. Or you can make a Descendant Chart and that can include any pictures you have added to the tree. If you are sending it via a CD you will need to hit the Share button and then choose the Export to option you prefer PDF is Adobe and this is the only way you can export them to copy to a CD, but Reports you can Export to PDF Adobe or to RTF which is any word program. With the 14 day free trial on Ancestry you no longer need a credit card to activate it, but don't activate it until you have 14 days to spare to get the most out of it. so put of registering it until you have your tree all copied over and you are ready. Hope these 2 messages help. Bleggy |

Hi Bleggy, Thank you for your reply and input. I can't purchase anything till Thursday so I have a few days to consider what to do. In the mean time I will endeavour to learn how to use Legacy. OldChooks message gives me hope that perhaps I won't need to purchase FTM after all. I'm very impressed that some women have a great understanding of the workings of computers. The very small amount I know would fit onto a postage stamp. So it's great to have help available when needed. "anniepannie1000" |

Hi OldChook, Thank you for your reply and info. I have now done as you suggested and have viewed the on screen preview. Thank you so much. I am now ready to do a tour of how the programme works. This is very daunting for me as I am much better if someone shows me step by step what to do. If I get stuck I will take you up on your offer of help and get back to you. Ta. I have sent a gedcom file to my Bigpond address so hopefully I have done it correctly and will eventually arrive. Now I need to write these instructions in my notebook for future reference. Thank you again for your help. "anniepannie1000" |

Hi Anniepannie1000, I nearly chocked on my coffee when I read your post re Legacy and the problems you were having, although there are differences between V7 and the Delux version, the standard model does everything you could ask of in a free program with descendant, ancestor, family and individual reports available, this version is always kept up to date with any changes the good folk at Legacy make and is made available to users at no cost. I do have the version 7 users manual in .pdf form and could e-mail it to you but it is 9.13 MB in size but if you can't download that and you need a little help on any section give me a call and I will see if I can help with the particular section you are having trouble with. You will enjoy Legacy once you get into it. thethinman |

From: anniepannie1000 | Hi "thethinman", Sorry I caused you to nearly choke on your coffee. I don't know why I had such a mixup with the Legacy download. All I did was make the selection and press the button. I was thrown off when I was unable to get a descendants view but after following OldChooks instructions I was able to get the Legacy version of it. It makes a big differance when one knows how to find things. I did try to send a gedcom to my Bigpond email address but that didn't happen. My computer saved it to "my documents" but I was unable to open it. Perhaps if I tell you what I did could you please tell me where I went wrong? I went to file, then "export to", then "gedcom file" next is a square box where a postage stamp would go if it was a letter and it says "select file name and start export" I called the file CALE & CLARK and selected to have it go to my documents but I was unable to open it. I was hoping I could send it to my own e-mail but there was nowhere to put my address. Tomorrow when every body is out I will see if I can follow the teaching help on the website OldChook gave me. My problem is I don't understand the terms and words used. All very technical. Thanks for your help, "anniepannie1000"

From: thethinman | Glad the program is starting to work for you. The steps you have outlined are OK but you can't save the gedcom to your e-mail, well at least I don't think you can. By default the gedcom is saved to the data folder in Legacy, which is accessed by going to " my computer ", " local drive ' C ' ", then opening the Legacy folder, from there you will see the data folder, click on that and it opens and should show you something like CALE & CLARK FTWGedcom. It is ok to save it to your documents folder. To send the gedcom to an e-mail addy you need to start a new e-mail with the recipants addy and then ATTACH the gedom to the e-mail and then send, but I would not send it to myself at my home e-mail address. You may have a bigpond account for your home mail and a hotmail for UCS, send it to the hotmail addy as I did yesterday with mine. You should be able to open the gedcom. I hope I haven't confused the issue for you. "thethinman".

Hi thethinman, I followed your instructions and now have a gedcom at my Yahoo email address. And I can open it and it's exactly the same as the original. Yeah! You didn't confuse me at all and your instructions were very easy to follow. Thank you. May I ask another question please? I want to put my own family history into a blank Legacy programme so today I downloaded from their site just as I did the first one but instead of getting a blank programme it arrived with CALE & CLARK info in it. I deleted it and tried again but the same thing happened...arrived with Debs family info in it. What have I done wrong this time? And how do I get a blank programme to work with? Thank you again for your help. many blessings, "anniepannie1000" |

Hi anniepannie1000, Just noticed your query in relation to a new family file. l gather you have a gedcom for the family you want to import. Up the top of Legacy screen you will see File on left side. Click on file and you will see some options. Click on New Family File. You will see a set up wizard box come up. Once you have done this you import Gedcom file from where you are storing it. (Perhaps :My Documents"). This can be done from clicking on to "l want to import from another.....program". Next. Click on A different program from Gedcom. Next l know where the file is on my computer. Choose the Gedcom file you have for the new family. See how you go with this. Just remember to swap between trees go to "FILE" at the top. From here you can back up your tree as well. Just make sure you are backing up the correct tree though as you'll have more than one. Hope it makes sense and helps, scream out if it doesn't. Thanks OldChook, I was trying to type a reply to say she needed to open a new file not download a new program, but I could not get my copy of Legacy to open, seems it is too old and I don't heve any names entered in it, so it must be updated before I can use it, so I could not give detailed instructions on where to find a new file. Thanks Bleggy |

Hi anniepannie1000, Well done and seeing that both OldChook and Bleggy have replied to you with regard to a "new" family file I will not muddy the waters. Enjoy Legacy it is a great program. thethinman |

Hi Enforcer, OldChook, Bleggy, Genetracer and thethinman, Sorry I have not been back to thank you all for your help. I have been busy with Deb and the problems in ENGLAND. I have given up trying to enter the family data into Legacy 7 programme. I just couldn't follow the instructions so I am entering all data into BK because I know how to and then every few days I send a gedcom to Legacy. Now I need to work out how to save a copy of the Legacy programmes to my external hard drive where I hope they will be safer. Hope you are all finding lots of info for your trees. "anniepannie1000" |

Hi Anniepannie, In the top bar of the Legacy Tree program click on FILE then Back Up Family File then in the box that opens choose your External File frequently drive E and save to there. That should keep it safe as you will work from the one on your main drive not the back up one so remember every few day to back up to the external drive. Bleggy |
