I know the place names for events registered in VICTORIA are often abbreviated. I have a death record that shows ROSE and from knowing where the family lived it would not be ROSE RIVER or ROSEWHITE or ROSEBROOK. So that leaves ROSEDALE and ROSEBUD.

I guess my question now is - are the abbreviations unique and is there a full list? I found one large list and ROSE was not on it.
Most of the family were born in and died in YARRAM so that suggests ROSEDALE however the spouse of one was a teacher at RYE so that suggests ROSEBUD.

Does anyone know if ROSEBUD or ROSEDALE is abbreviated to something other than ROSE?

Thanks.

Dave

Hi "DaveHam9"

ROSEBERY = HOPETOUN

ROSEDALE = CARRUM DOWNS

ROSENEATH = CASTERTON

If you would like to post the persons name I will see if I can find them for you.

From yogi.

Hello yogi,

Now I'm confused.When you say ROSEBERY = HOPETOUN does that mean a place that was once called ROSEBERY is now called HOPETOUN? The death was in 1972 so we are not dealing with places that have changed names.

If the abbreviations are not unique then a death record with ROSE... on it is not much help by itself. I hope there is a way of deciding between ROSEDALE and ROSEBUD.

However, yogi, I'd prefer not to turn this in to a look up - LOL I have 3 incomplete ones and if this HAMILTON /BLAND one gets started it will take as long as the SANDS / BUTLER / SILVA to complete.

Regards,

Dave

Hi "DaveHam9"

If a person died at ROSEBERY you would get in touch with the people at HOPETOUN Cemetery..

ROSEDALE information to CARRUM DOWNS.

ROSENEATH information to CASTERTON.

Hello yogi,

Ok, thank you. I've done a bit more 'Googling' and it seems the abbreviations are not unique.

I have lots of queries for BLAND / HAMILTON so sometime in the future I will start a look up thread.

Regards,

Dave

Hi "DaveHam9"

They would make it so much easier if they just wrote out the whole name place, but then we wouldn't have a much fun tiring
to figure it out..(LOL)

Hello yogi,

Yes, or at least have a list of unique abbreviations like NSW BDM does for the old Church Parish 2-letter codes.

I just checked where her spouse died - he was a teacher at RYE and he died at FLINDERS so I'm assuming ROSE... = ROSEBUD for now and we can check when I post the look up thread.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

but you will see that it says R'DALE = ROSEDALE
                                      and ROSE =ROSEDALE but I was told by the staff at BALLARAT Library that is incorrect and
                                           ROSE = ROSEBUD

Hope this helps,
Ann

Hello 'anniepannie',

Thanks Ann. I didn't find that list when I searched. It does look like it is ROSEBUD. I don't think any list is free of errors. It says BULL = BULLA but what about BULLAROOK? I have one HAMILTON ancestor born there in 1863. I believe it became BUNGAREE in 1866. Several siblings were born in BUNG.... lucky I know it is BUNGAREE. Another was born in what was called GORDON'S.

Regards,

Dave
