Hi, This has been a real brick wall for 4 of us for years, so not expecting miracles. Thomas DAVI(E)S & Matilda WATTS lived in the mid-north area SOUTH AUSTRALIA (CLARE - MELROSE) mid 1880s. No idea where they came from, no death records SOUTH AUSTRALIA. The only recorded birth to this couple is my Gt. Grandfather John Frederick DAVIS b.20 Feb 1856 CLARE SOUTH AUSTRALIA - have his details. Other children confirmed by distant relatives (also tearing their hair out seeking answers) Walter Charles DAVIS bc.1849 ? married Jessie McKENNA at MELROSE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1875 Frank Watts DAVIS bc.1852 ? married Annie HIRSCHHAUSSEN at BURRA SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1876- no you don't want to hear about the mess in that family. Recurring names in the families Walter Charles, Arthur Joseph, Thomas Hand There is a marriage of a Matilda DAVIES, father John WATTS, at CLARE SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1858 but no corresponding death for Thomas. A pointer to an issue might be that even my Gt. Grandfather's first 3 children's births were not registered, please don't let that put you off. Willing to look at any information, even UFOs at this stage. Thanks. | |

I've brought this over from another query and will ask you to close that one. Hi starting to get somewhere with the family, If anyone has access to Ancestry and the time could you please lookup possible births of the following couple and any information about their parents. The following is from the marriage certificate, ages given as Full Age: Thomas DAVIS born-unknown, father William DAVIS (milkman?), mother ? Married at St. George's Church HANOVER SQUARE, LONDON, ENGLAND 21 April 1838. Matilda WATTS born-unknown, father John WATTS (gardener), mother ? Thomas, a servant, residence White Horse St. LONDON at the time of marriage . I can not find them in the 1841 census data available to me but they did not arrive in SOUTH AUSTRALIA until May 1849. Their known children, the male names recurr through the family in AUSTRALIA: - Elizabeth Anne DAVIS baptised MORTLAKE, RICHMOND, SURREY, ENGLAND 1842 (died Elizabeth PYCRAFT in SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1920).
- Thomas Hand DAVIS baptised MORTLAKE, RICHMOND, SURREY, ENGLAND 1844 (died SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1915).
- Walter Charles DAVIS baptised MORTLAKE, RICHMOND, SURREY, ENGLAND 1847 (died SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1892).
- Arthur Joseph DAVIS born circa 1850 ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA (died SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1934).
- Frank Watts DAVIS born circa 1852 CLARE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA (died BROKEN HILL, NEW SOUTH WALES 1903)
- John Frederick DAVIS born 1856 CLARE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA (died CLARE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1941)

Thanks very much for the info n4cer99, sorry about the delay replying, I got called away. The SURREY info is terrific, validates my thoughts. I don't think we will find a birth registration for Arthur Joseph or Frank Watts. In SOUTH AUSTRALIA it would seem it was not compulsary to register births prior to 1855 and not until after 1907 did marriage or death registrations include the place of birth. I went in to the SAGHS to view the microfiche of original documents. Arthur Joseph died 1934, stated on the regisration born HINDMARSH ADELAIDE, by age, born about 1850, soon after they arrived. Frank Watts fortunately moved to BROKEN HILL, states on children's birth and his death registrations that he was born in CLARE SOUTH AUSTRALIA, by age around 1852. Thanks again S_A |
