Hi, I'm trying to track down where John Henry STEVENS came from and who his parents etc. were, and when he came to AUSTRALIA. His first marriage certificate dated June 14 1869, states he was 23 yrs old and a bachelor and he came from SURREY, ENGLAND. His father was John Henry STEVENS a Gardener. His mother Hannah maiden name unknown. He married Mary Ann HARBER in FITZROY, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA. Mary Ann died in 1875 in VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA. John later married Evlyne WHITMORE in 1875 at EAST BYLANDS, VICTORIA. He was widower with three children. The certificate also states he was b. SURREY, ENGLAND and was aged 29yrs. His father John Henry STEVENS a Gardener. Note: Mother Mary Ann Unknown. (there is a note on the certificate stating that John didn't know his mother's maiden name as he was very young when she died.) John Henry STEVENS died 1931 ALBURY N.S.W. he was 83yrs old. Parents John Henry STEVENS Labourer and Mary Ann SMITH? Informant was a Matron at ALBURY District Hospital. Certificate states he was b. DONCASTER, ENGLAND and he lived 60yrs in N.S.W. and 21 yrs in VICTORIA. I have found shipping records on Public Record Site For the following: STEVENS CHARLES 6 APR 1853 MONTEAGLE B 034 015 STEVENS ISABELLA 1 APR 1853 MONTEAGLE B 034 015 STEVENS JOHN 4 APR 1853 MONTEAGLE B 034 015 STEVENS JOHN H 29 APR 1853 MONTEAGLE B 034 015 STEVENS MARY A 30 APR 1853 MONTEAGLE B 034 015 This could be John Henry STEVENS and his family any help would be appreciated as I'm trying to find out where he came from as my Mother is going to ENGLAND in 5 weeks and she would like to visit the area where her Great Grandfather came from. Hi Genetracer, Thanks for the info. from the census records, I noticed in the 1841 there's no mention of John Henry STEVENS can you try and find out where he was, as he wasn't married until 1844. Also Sophia STEVENS John's mother is listed as being born in THORPE, SURREY abt 1797, could you see if there's any record of her birth on Ancestry.com. Kindest regards Cousins1944 |

Hi "Cousins1944", There is no entry on Pallots Marriage Index or IGI for Jonathon and Sophia's marriage and without her maiden name I am unable to find her birth. IGI does not have entries for THORPE SURREY. You will need to check parish registers for the marriage as they are not online you need to contact the County Records Office for SURREY. Hi "Cousins1944", I am unable to find John Henry on the 1841 census as it only lists the County of birth and only if residing in that County otherwise lists not born in County residing in, not place and does not identify relationships between people living in the households, and therefore there is no way of identifying him on the 1841 census.
