Here are some items you can recycle and reuse for crafts ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Junk mail. Credit card companies and magazines constantly send stickers with their offers. We have a big popcorn tin full of free stickers. The kids also like to play Post Office with the envelopes. Any shredded paper makes great hair, spaghetti, and confetti!
- Empty toy boxes. I especially love the ones with plastic lids because they make wonderful shadow boxes. We cover them with construction paper or paint them. Then, the kids glue things inside. They are a wonderful way to display a nifty leaf collection, for example.
- Flattened cereal boxes. These make great game boards or interesting Polly Pocket or Hot Wheels backdrops. Macaroni and cheese boxes often have characters that we cut out and use as game pieces or glue into other art projects.
- Tissue packing paper. There are way too many uses for this to list, but my kids' favorite activity is wrapping things up and making me guess what's inside.
- Cardboard backpack inserts. This year's backpacks came with tombstone-shaped cardboard. These led to lots of creative uses.
- Dryer lint. Who knew? It makes funky hair, or if you pack it inside toilet paper tubes, it makes excellent fire starters. I let the kids decorate them like firecrackers. It keeps them busy.
- By now, you may be groaning, "Yeah, this is all well and good, but where am I suppose to keep all this junk?" Easy, try storing the items in a recycling bin. If it doesn't get used, let it go. The things I store take up a surprisingly small amount of space, and we try to use them right away. One bonus is that because we make so many things, the kids don't mind recycling their old projects to make room for the new ones!
