This poem was inspired by an article in the local news on 12/12/2007, "North East parents prefer their kids to speak "Standard English" instead of the Geordie dialect."
DROP THE ACCENT!
Why can't I be a Geordie,
If that's where I was born?
Why must I speak so prim and proper,
When "why-aye, man" is all I've known?
Why should I change me accent?
I like to prononce me vowels, like.
I don't like the Queen's English.
She's far too posh for me, man!
Why can't I just talk like this?
The way that I was born to talk?
I like soundin' like me dad
When he comes home from the pit.
Don't want to speak in "Standard English".
It's far too posh for me!
I'd like to keep me vowel sounds.
No elocution lessons for me!
