(1 recommendation so far) Message 1 of 29 in Discussion

I have several drill presses and was recently considering buying one of the radial arm drill presses to reach better into the center of  my projects. I have ruined several projects by hand drilling the holes only to find out the holes were not straight. I was just curious about what everyone else uses. All ideas would be helpful. Also if anyone thinks the radial press is a good  idea where would they recommend I start. I know shop fox and grizzly both make some but I have never used any of their tools before.

Needing guidance,
Meli

I use a similar set up with my hand drill as Vince and it is very easy to use.  The only set up required prior to drill is just changing out bits if needed.

Meli;

You can make your own drill press very easily. It will have about a thirty (30) inch throat and is extremely portable. I made one about 15 yrs ago and it still works like the day it was made. Send me an email and I'll send you additional information.

I've also been having problems with drilling holes in the middle of a project where the drill press can't reach.  I've found a plunge router attachment for the Dremel and think maybe this is the solution to my problem.  If I use a drill bit instead of a router bit and line it up properly where I need to drill my hole then I (theoretically) can just push down on it and it should drill a nice straight hole.  My only question is concerning the length of the drill bit.  Since drill bits are much longer than router bits I may have to shorten the length of my bits to work with the attachment but I'm thinking it's worth a try for $30.00.  I'm going to Lowes this evening to pick one up and I'll let you know how/if it works.

I hadn't seen your reply to this question prior to my last message.  It would appear that I'm on the right track and that this will work for me.  I like this idea so much better than a new drill press or making something to do the job.  I have so many other projects on my plate that making something else just doesn't fit into my schedule. For instructions, get the book from the library... but this is the general idea... kind of like a desk lamp based on two 3/4 x 3/4 pivoting on dowels and acting like a parallelogram to keep the attached Dremel vertical... as long as the holes in the two 3/4x3/4 are the same distance apart and the dowels are aligned vertically and spaced the same in both blocks, it should work on general geometry principles...lengths and other dimensions are whatever you want. So if the holes in the 3/4x3/4" pieces are about 26" apart, the throat could be about 30" from drill bit to base.  Drill is held to its block with hose clamps or plastic ties.

A spring in the back holds drill up when not in use.

hello,,,, there are alot of good answers here, and I have done some of them too,,,,, but I have the answer for the depth of throw, and ust about every other drilling problem,,, try the powermatic drillpress.
It ha a full 4 1/4 in quill throw, biggest I have heard of and used.
huge table, lazers, LED lights built in, all bells and whistles.
Less money than the Radial arm press you had thought about.
Just check it out, I am sooooooooo glad I did.

I would very much like to have your plan for the drill press with the 30" throat.  Thanks for sharing.  [email protected]

I purchased a plunge type attachment for my dremel tool. This gives me the ability to drill a right angle hole anywhere on my large frets

Cheers,

Dalton, I looked up the Powermatic drillpress & the only one they had was an 18" for 949.99. I think I'll stick with what I have. Don't know what yours is or where you might have gotten it.  Larry

Look up Grizzly tools, I have their radial arm drill press & it works great tho I have never used it for fretwork holes I don't see it not working just fine & no where near 950 bucks.
