Great idea! How about SA bowls for sunflower seeds and raisins, maybe some mandarin oranges, thawed frozen peas, croutons. You could make Radish blossoms with the paring knife. Pickles with the small serving tongs. Slice Red onions with the US&G, Grated Parmesan, Banana peppers? You don't have any stoneware listed but since you don't want to heat up the house you could at least bring a stone to talk about them...I'd say talk about making bacon in the bar pan, but I guess that's becoming a no-no? Also bring along your seasonings. You never know if someone would like to try the Italian Seasoning on the salad....or at least use it in the dressing. Love the NO COOKING idea for something other than wraps! Michelle |

You
could make some croutons on a stone while the salad is being prepared…although
that defeats the purpose of not using the oven.

I would say, make some bread up ahead of time (a nice crusty bread goes good with a salad!) and use that to spur the discussion about stoneware. Doing it ahead of time means you don't have to actually cook/bake at the show and heat up the house. This is a really great idea. If anyone's not done the mediterranian salad (I can't remember, it's in one of the SB, maybe the S/S 2004?) it's really good and very pretty. The salad dressing was very tasty too.... |

If you want to talk about stoneware, suggest doing premade things like pizza crust or the canapes. Make them in the morning when the house is still cool, it is the best time to have to heat up the house if you have to. Kimberly |

Maybe this sounds stupid, but what does bUmP mean? I guess I don't get it. I keep seeing Marian, Jenn, and Michelle doing it, but have no idea what you're bUmPiNg or what it's doing. Sorry for being so slow. Lisa |

Hey, that's ok, Lisa. You're still a newbie here.... so let me explain as simple as possible.... Many if not most of us read the messages directly off the board via the web. And as the day progresses, a message will begin to fall down on the list of current discussions. And then as the days, weeks, & even months go by, a message can very easily fall from the 1st page of recent discussions to pages further back. And on THIS board we're sooo chatty a message can get buried in a matter of 24 hours!! So when we say BUMP that just means we've "bumped up" the specific discussion to the TOP of the list once again. Hope that's now as clear as mud?!! Marian |

I did find this last night on the web. I'm doing a SA show in three weeks. This sounds similar to the salads on here. Simple Additions Serving and Selling Ideas Awesome Simple Additions ideas from Director, Tracy Godat. (She was watching a cooking show where the gal was demonstrating how to 'plate' your food.) She recommended a white ceramic platter to show off the food colors best and with the most versatility. The cooking show also showed a simple salad being prepared and displayed on a large, white ceramic plate. The director in my group demonstrated this at my last director meeting and our jaws dropped. Try to picture this: put sunflower seeds in the small boat. Place that diagonally on the small plate with fishy crackers on either side of the small boat. Now place the small plate in the top left corner of the large square platter. Take one bag of lettuce and fill in the remaining area (a backwards 'L'). Now chop and slice your favorite veggies... coarsely chopped broccoli, diagonally sliced carrots, sliced egg, grated cheese, sliced olives, sliced cucumbers, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, etc. Now place these veggies in individual 'rows' putting contrasting colors next to each other on top of the lettuce. My director also showed us how to cut up and cube a mango, and used that as one of the rows for texture, color and flavor. Serve this with salad dressing in the small bowls placed on the rectangle platter, place the large serving tongs on the salad, and the small serving tongs in the sunflower seeds. She also grilled 2-3 chicken breasts with one of our seasonings, then carved into strips with the carving set and set in the medium bowl to be served with the salad. What a gorgeous display! I have now made this at 3 shows and the hosts/guests love it. Here's a tip I learned: prepare the salad before the show so it's all set up. Cover with tin foil and ask your guests how they serve salad at home... in a bowl? With the veggies cut up and served in cereal bowls? Don't they just love to bring 'salad' to potlucks because they're so beautiful? Well, you will NOW! Take off the tin foil and unveil a beautiful salad that looks like it came from the Four Seasons chef. It's jaw-dropping and sells the Essential Set easily. I did this for my family first, and they wondered where I bought it. Guests can eat the salad while you show a few tools and perhaps the dessert, so they've already 'experienced' Simple Additions by the time they order. Mention half-price and free tools while pulling off the aluminum foil, and bookings will not be a problem. Because the salad was prepared ahead of time, the demos have been very simple and quick, and show high-priced tools allowing a few extra minutes for the guests to shop and socialize. It's been a hit. Thanks for da BUMP Chef Lady! -Becky NEOhio SSM2 |
