Just finished reading The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn by Robin Maxwell & it was done up decently. The plot is that Kingston's niece smuggled Anne's diary out of the Tower with a promise to give it to Elizabeth when she became queen, & the story takes place in the period before Amy Robsart's death. Anne's diary entries are interspersed with their effect on the daughter who is reading them & getting to know her mother for the first time in her life. Historical accuracy was good in both sections, & the author makes the connection between what happened to Anne & Elizabeth's decision not to marry Dudley. This is a much better Tudor novel than Philippa Gregory churns out. |
