What was a hair shirt?  I read after Thomas Becket's death he was found to be wearing one, and Katherine of Aragon apparently wore one too.  Thanks in advance!

It was a garment worn under normal clothing in order to mortify the flesh.  It was usually made of coarse animal hair like goat, and must have been very uncomrtable.   They could be worn for short periods as a penance, or very religious people might have worn them all the time.  I believe Thomas More wore one.  A hairshirt can also be called a cilice.

The Henry VIII DVD I just watched portrayed C of A as wearing one to the point where her flesh bled, in hopes that her suffering would move God to give her a healthy living son.
