Thankyou, now I know why the name Bessie was running around my head, did Henry die young? or did he go on to marry. |

Henry Fitzroy died at 17 (not at 3, like in 'that Tudor Show'!) of consumption, now known as tuberculosis. He outlived Anne Boleyn by only a month, and at the time of his death, Henry VIII was trying to get him nominated as a possible heir to the throne. Fitzroy was educated as a prince, with his close friend & brother-in-law Lord Surrey. Consumption carried off a lot of folk in the 16th century, including Arthur Tudor & later, Edward VI. I believe that Anne Neville, Richard III's queen also died of consumption. I personally suffer from asthma & have had walking pneumonia - it's terrible to struggle to breathe! |

Thankyou for the information, very interesting I suppose with no legitimate male heir that is why he had him educated so well, and didn't just disown him it makes you wonder what would have happened if he hadn't died so young.
Wishing you well.
Georgie

Henry VIII was showing his usual foresight and cunning when he approved this marriage. Norfolk, Mary Howard's father, was a ruthless and extremely capable military man. Henry possibly was considering making Fitzroy his heir - right up to that young man's death in 1536. The provisions of the Second Succession Act of 1536, certainly suggest this. Henry knew Norfolk would back Fitzroy's claim - Mary Howard would, after all, have become Queen, and Norfolk himself the possible grandfather of a future King of England. |
