I think that most people would agree that after the Conquest that life for most ordinary people stayed the same, though landlords might have changed. Obviously not all Saxons were reduced to serfdom, those in the towns remained free and there were certainly free Saxon peasants after 1066. So could anybody hazard a guess as to what proportion of the Saxon peasantry lost their freedom because of the Conquest?
