Crown & Country
Edward Wessex presents stories of politics and palaces. Combining elements of travel and history, the series explores the connections between each place visited and its relationship to the crown or monarchy through the ages. The third son and youngest child of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, Edward Wessex brings a unique and personal perspective to the programs. He skillfully interweaves hard facts with curious tidbits and charming anecdotes, guiding viewers through centuries of history.

Greenwich
Edward Wessex travels down the river Thames to Greenwich, site of the Royal Observatory built by Christopher Wren for Charles II. In addition to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich is home to Eltham Palace, where Henry VIII spent his childhood; the Queen's House, where the birth of the English Renaissance is said to have started with Inigo Jones' unique architectural design; and Queen Elizabeth's Oak, a grand old specimen dating back to the 12th century. In 1991, the tree collapsed; a new one was planted by the Duke of Edinburgh in honor of the 40th year of the current Queen Elizabeth's reign.

Hampton Court
Henry VIII spent three of his six honeymoons at Hampton Court, and the palace was altered by and for each of his marriages. As Edward Wessex tours the magnificent home, walking through its great hall, vast kitchens and glorious gardens, he tells stories of subsequent royal residents, such as William and Mary (William III and Mary II), responsible for the hierarchically designed state apartments; and George II, his queen, Caroline, and their eight children. He also points out the palace's magnificent clock and the royal tennis court, well-used by Henry VIII, and reveals whose cries are still heard in the 'Haunted Gallery.'

The City: Heart of the Empire
The City is the mile square area of London that houses the financial nerve center of the country. The program profiles the Bank of England -- founded in June 1964 because the Crown needed money to finance its war with France. The first contributors were William and Mary, the reigning monarchs. Viewers witness the ancient ceremony of the 'Trial of the Picts' -- the test for the purity of currency -- and learn about the Great 12 Livery Companies and the Guilds that have controlled commerce for the last 700 years.

Richmond Palace
Host Edward Wessex guides viewers through a part of London that was once the site upon which a great palace stood, a palace that covered 20 acres. All that remains now are the foundations beneath the ground, fascinating stories and magnificent views immortalized in paintings by Turner. The tour includes the beautiful Observatory at Richmond; the Hermitage and Merlin's Cave; the elegant Marble Hill House; Richmond Park; and a row of houses used as a wardrobe to store approximately 2,000 dresses belonging to Queen Elizabeth I.

Secrets of the Dead
Today's scientists, armed with advanced technology and a tireless determination to know the truth, are penetrating myths and legends to arrive at important new conclusions about the causes and consequences of history's darkest mysteries. Part detective story, part true-life drama, SECRETS OF THE DEAD unearths evidence from across the globe, challenging prevailing ideas and throwing fresh light on unexplained events that have captured popular imagination and confounded scientific theories. Using the latest laboratory and field science, scientists and researchers examine the missing pieces of each puzzle, applying updated techniques and retooled theories, and come away with complex and detailed pictures of what had been merely sketches and suppositions.
Mystery of the Black Death
Not everyone who came in contact with the Black Plague bacteria, which ravaged medieval Europe, died. Geneticist Steven O'Brien is trying to find out why some survived when so many others perished. His investigation takes him to a little town in England that was hit by the plague in 1665. Using historical records, town archives and modern forensic techniques, O'Brien turns the town into a medical case study that reveals some startling information about the disease. After proving that the scourge in the town really was plague and not some other disease, he discovers that the people who managed to survive were blessed with a genetic mutation that made them immune to the effects of the bacteria. Even more startling, that same genetic mutation has now been proven to give some people immunity to the most deadly disease of the modern age - AIDS. This program tells the story of the survivors of the devastating plague and takes viewers on a journey of investigation into the world of a deadly pandemic.
