Modern Marvels: Hadrian's Wall

Tuesday, February 24th at 1 PM & 7 PM

Stretching for 74 miles across the hills and
valleys of Northern England, Hadrian's Wall was
erected by Roman soldiers to mark the Northern
boundary of their empire. Well over a thousand
years after the Roman Empire has collapsed, this
edifice still stands in mute testament to its
builders, a fascinating structure historians and
archeologists study to this day. Built of stone
and mortar by Roman soldiers, it is the most
significant Roman ruin in England. In this
episode of the Modern Marvels series, the
construction of this architectural wonder is
investigated by leading scholars of the Roman
Empire. This program reveals how Hadrian's Wall
was actually used as a gateway into the empire
rather than purely as a defensive barrier, and
how it has managed to survive for nearly 2,000
years. This documentary offers valuable insights
into Roman innovations in architecture, the
techniques of archeological discovery, and the
history of the Roman Empire.

okay, i know most of you are british and you're country is really small so everyone has likely seen the wall but i was SO excited when i, an american, finally got to come over and see it!  it was not only historically exciting (and really funny when i got to visit the old, 3rd century toilets) but the wall seems to just fit right into the scenery!  gorgeous...

I just loved England.  I would love to come back again.  There is so much to see.  Its impossible to see everything in one visit.  Someday we'll return.

I'm English and I've never left the British Isles (except for a one day jaunt across the Channel to France for Christmas shopping), there is so much history in every town and village if you know where to look.

Sad to say this is going to be a year I miss going to England. I understand those feelings one might get at seeing something like Hadrians Wall, as I also got a feeling of history just seeing it for the first time in 1995. So much history in Britain one could spend a life time of holidays just going there. Judy
