OK this was on TMC & I thought well, tis from the golden era of Hollywood with Bette Davis as Elizabeth & Errol Flynn as Essex (tho the casting of Vincent Price as Raleigh was a lil weird in retrospect)....that's when they knew how to make movies!

Apparently NOT....this movie is sooooooo bad, it's worth watching just for the giggle factor!  They plucked about 2 facts out of history....Essex's raid on Cadiz & his being appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland....& the rest was pure camp & over-emoting.  I particularly enjoyed it near the end when he was in a Tower dungeon (anyone knows prisoners of rank had their own apartments jeez) & Elizabeth was there wanting to see him before his execution....so all of a sudden this trapdoor in the Tower's throne room floor opens up ROFL & he comes bopping up the steps HA HA...as if.

Olivia de Havilland had a small role as one of Elizabeth's ladies, "Lady Penelope", who had the hots for Essex, which I found weird as Penelope Rich was Essex's sister....no mention at all of Frances Walsingham....I reckon adultery was taboo in them days to show maybe?

My my! What a dump! Greens is trashin' my flick!
Go fasten your seatbelt,  I'm gonna be sick!
She's mockin' my Lizzie! I rocked as ole' Bess
And I made her look hot when I put on her dress!

Who cares it was lies? It was ME on the screen,
I was gorgeous as Liz, and I stole every scene!
Yes, Errol was in it, but he was a bore,
Yet they came to see ME, and the public screamed, "More!"

So I did it again after twenty-five years
I was Lizzie the Virgin with all of her tears!
I loved Walter Raleigh, he hated my guts
And he married Throckmorton, just one o' the sluts!

Well I axed Errol Flynn, but I didn't do Todd,
Lizzie's cousin's boy Jimmy gave Raleigh the nod,
And his head was whacked off with the queen in her grave
Since the wrinkled old prune had her virtue to save.

I was AWESOME as Bess! No one else does her fair
Cate Blanchett was awful! She didn't compare!!
Ms. Dench tried to play her in "Shakespeare in Love",
And she garnished the Oscar!!! I screamed from above!!

It shoulda been ME!! I deserved the award,
She was my greatest role, and the public was floored!
It was all Errol's fault! How I hated him so,
Just for messin' with ME in my loveliest show.

"Good riddance to rubbish!" , I laughed when he croaked
And I smiled when he died, and I sat there and smoked.
He might have been sexy, but I was the star,
Who was better than any ole' Lizzie so far!
