Channel 4's Elizabeth I, starring Helen Mirren as the virgin queen, has scooped 13 nominations at this year's prestigious Primetime Emmys, in what could be a bumper year for UK productions.

Elizabeth I, which was made by Company Pictures and screened on HBO in the US, picked up nominations for best miniseries, best actress in a mini-series for Helen Mirren and other technical categories such as best art direction in a miniseries.

The nominations were announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles by former Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Garrett, from the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

Nominated UK writers, producers and talent will have to wait until Sunday August 27 to find out if they have won, when 2006 Emmy Awards ceremony takes place in LA.
