The Gospel of Judas was presented to the public by National Geographic en force today.  The Gospel of Judas has been floating around western historians/collectors for 30 years.  But after carbon-testing, historical language and handwriting analysis, it appears the Gospel of Judas tests-out.

Most shocking is the view that Judas was actually fulfilling a friendship duty by turning Jesus over to the Romans.  The Gospel of Judas explains that by doing-so, Judas helped release Jesus from the earthly bounds.

I will wait to hear and see more (there is a program on this subject to be aired on The National Geographic Channel.) before I make sense out of such a long-held view on Judas place within Jesus' story.  There are some books newly published, and more in the offing on the Gospel of Judas from differing points of view.

There is a book I read many years ago called "The Passover Plot" by Scofield (not too sure of the author) and from what I remember of it, that is exactly what the crucifixtion was, a "plot". I would like to see the program on it as well but don't see it on my t.v. line-up. Please keep us posted as to what is found "to be true"....

I do not have cable.  But I did order the book.  It is an interesting story, and I do also vaguely recall the book you mention.

It was found by a farmer in a remote Egyptian burial cave in the 1970s, the text was sold to an antiques dealer who at one point left it disintegrating in a Long Island safe-deposit box for 16 years. After changing hands a couple of times, it finally ended up with a Swiss foundation, according to "The Lost Gospel" by journalist Herbert Krosney, which was released with the document.

Judging from radiocarbon testing, the papyrus text appears to date from about AD 300, or perhaps a bit later based on analysis of the handwriting style.

The scholarly team that studied the text for National Geographic - including Rodolphe Kasser of Switzerland's University of Geneva, Marvin Meyer of America's Chapman University and Gregor Wurst of Germany's University of Augsburg - believe the document is a copy of a text first mentioned as heretical by Bishop Irenaeus in AD 180.

Here's a link to the National Geographic article:

And here is a link to the actual translated text:

It is not written in the form or concept of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) but rather in the form and concept of the Gnostics which many scholars think was the original form of Christianity.

Thank you for this information, Lady. I have long been interested in the Gospel of Judas, and the link you provided enabled me to print it. Interesting stuff!!! I have had a lot of difficulty trying to post to this sight recently. I am constantly having to reset my password, and I get a message from MSN that says I have entered the incorrect password too many times or else someone else is trying to log in to my account. I wonder if anyone else has has this problem? I am hoping that this message will be sent and I can become an active member again.

Twice in the last year or so I have had to re-join my groups with a new name and different email address after I would go to log on and told I was no longer a member.

Yep yep!! You're right!! I'm Painter now!
I finally changed it back somehow!
I tried and tried, but always failed
Until at last, my luck prevailed!

I changed my password, tried again,
And now I'm what I shoulda been!
I'm home at last where I belong
To sing another stupid song!!

Tra la! Tra la!! What's up dear folks?
I'm back with silly Tudor jokes,
And tales of wives who got no heads,
And kings with floosies in their beds.

I'm home at last! I clicked my heels,
I wish you knew how good it feels
To post a ditty with my friends
Where Tudor nonsense never ends!
