Hello, I just thought it might be nice to say "hi" as I've just joined your group. I must say it looks fun. My name's Alan, I'm 39 and am lucky enough to live in York, England. I was born here and, no surprises.....am a Ricardian!! I have other interests too of course, which mainly involve watching our local football team York City FC lose!!! But history is a big interest of mine, especially the Wars Of The Roses, so I signed up. York's a great place, surrounded by medieval (and Roman and Viking) history, but when you've lived here all your life, it's so easy to take it for granted. I catch myself walking past the Minster sometimes and not even "seeing" it, if you catch my drift. The biggest cathedral north of the Alps and I'm dashing by it to meet my friends for a night out.....shocking really. By the way, pubs here in York called "The Kings Arms" only have one Kng on the pub sign...and it aint Henry Tudor........ Anyway, I just thought it would be nice to say hello to you all, thanks for letting me join and I will try to be an active contributor if I have something relevant and intelligent to say. Kindest Regards Alan |

Alan, I grew up in Southern California and never saw the sites it had to offer until company from out of town came, needless to say I always looked forward to visitors. So I know what it is to take for granted the area in which you live, but I am sure if I lived in Yorkshire I would know every square inch of it. How fortunate you are to be surrounded by all that wonderful history Yorkshire has to offer. I was only in York once on a tour and had two hours to spend. At the time my main interests were shopping, guess where I spent my two hours and completely missed even the Minster, what a loss!! I do hope to go back on my own in the near future and then take in all I can minus the shops! Judy | | |

Oh yes, you really should come back, there's not just the Minster...there's the medieval city walls, the Viking museum, The Shambles (medieval city street), the Roman remains....I could go on but it would sound boastful and I wouldn't want that. Having said that, I think America's a great place, my dearest friend in the whole world is American (she's a lawyer and sooooo patriotic!!) I try to talk to her about UK history and she tells me "honey, it don't matter, because they're all dead and they weren't American....!!" She means it too! She's a sweetie though, in fact I never met an American I didn't like, though I haven't met them all yet, lol. It's true though, one never fully appreciates where one lives. I love travelling to the US and will be back there in October. Last year I saw Gettysburg and Antietam, which I know have no connections to UK history, but it was memorable nonetheless. Robert E Lee is a person I am interested in, in fact the Confederacy as a whole. (Slavery's repugnant of course but we Brits love a gallant loser) So it was amazing to see the sites one normally reads about in books Anyway, I'm droning on, but, yes, do come back, you'll love it. Happy Independence Day Regards Alan |

We heart Ricardians here. If you live in Yorkshire & you're not one, do they rough you up?? Gettysburg is a US place on my list & since I'm not that far from it, I ougtha be ashamed of myself LOL Nice that you can pop across the pond & see the interesting stuff we got even if it's not Ricardian. |

Well lets just say that Earl Of Northumberland got what was coming to him a few years after Bosworth at the hands of a Yorkshire mob!!!!! Yes, I was impressed by Gettysburg but truly shocked that when my friend and I drove up to the site we saw a KFC and a MacDonalds!! But, to be fair, it's a big place and folks have to eat whilst they are there. It just seemed a little strange seeing them there that's all. I'll have a McLee burger please......... |
