I recently saw Kenneth Branagh's most excellent "Henry V" on our local PBS station. I had forgotten that wonderful St. Crispin's Day speech he made! Anyway, at one point in the movie, Henry V claims a Welsh heritage. I'm not so good on the earlier Lancastrian begats - I know that Katherine Swynford was Welsh, but she is not an ancestress of H5, correct? So how did he claim this heritage? {or is another of Shakespeare's embroideries on history??} |

It may be that Shakespeare was highlighting the fact that he was born in Wales, at Monmouth. Or Henry could have had Welsh blood from his mother's line, that of the de Bohun family. I'll look into this if no-one else beats me to it. |
