I wasn't aware James and Mary of Guise had two boys before Mary, who both died in 1541 - can anyone tell me if this was through plague or accident? Lady Grace |

The second son, Robert, Duke of Albany, died aged two days, so it's reasonable to assume he was a victim of the infant mortality of the day. The two boys were born only 11 months apart. The elder, James, died just shy of his 1st birthday, not long after the newborn's demise. It's not recorded of what, but letters from Antoinette de Bourbon to her daughter ascribe the baby's death to "overfeeding"! Poison was also rumored, as well as James V's sins being visited upon his children. Mary's second son by her first husband also died shortly after birth, so there may be a genetic thing in play here as well. Only 2 of her 5 children survived to maturity, & only MQOS made it out of her teens, as Francis de Longueville died unexpectedly of the generic "fever" (probably some virulent virus) at age 16 during Mary of Guise's last visit to France. |

Infant mortality was so high back then, especially with nobles for a variety of reasons. Mothers had babies in quick sucession, which was extremely unhealthy for both, and could have resulted in many deaths. Since the royal mothers or other high-born didn't breast-feed, their bodies never really had a chance to fully recover from the birth and previous pregnancy before they were pushed into another. VERY poor hygiene during the birth, as well as lack of knowlege The babies, especially boys, being over-indulged, fed unsuitable food for their ages, and were kept in rooms that really didn't allow much air or light in (especially in the case of baby Edward VI), as well as possible lack of hygeine in the castles and nurseries. And remember what James V said when hearing his wife had a girl? "It began with a lass, it shall end with a lass". It's amazing at the "greetings" some of these royal girls get when they entered the world!! |

Well, he was right, though! The Stuart line DID begin & end with "a lass"; the last one just wasn't Mary! They started with Marjorie Stewart & ended with Queen Anne. |

Well, MQOS was the last independent ruler of Scotland. However, I am sure he'd be proud of his grandson for inheriting England. |
