I would like to know the opinions of others on the gunpowder plot. Do more people believe the traditional story of the Catholics plotting to blow up the protestant king(remembering that the chronicals of the time were written by protestants) or that the Catholics were actually framed my Robert Cecil and Francis Trensham?
I am aware that many people may not actaully know the other version of events.
My view is that they were framed

I don't think they were framed; after all there was a load of gunpowder primed ready to go up under Parliament and the conspirators attempted to raise the country in rebellion. But I do think Cecil knew of it well in advance and allowed it to run it's course before pouncing and declaring that a great Catholic plot had been defeated, thus turning public opinion even more against Rome.

We had a go at the Gunpowder Plot game a while back....it's HERE if you would like to blow up Parliament.

I agree with Mark that Cecil probably let it run its course & then pounced, as he did previously with the Babington Plot.  Cecil, after all, needed to prove his worth to his new master.

I think James I already had Cecil's number....Cecil certainly made his accession to the English throne rather seamless!
