Today being the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, I was thinking...what if it had succeeded?  Charles I would have come to the throne as a very young minor with a Regency Council.  Could his reign have done any worse starting so much earlier & with the usual faction infighting accompanying a regency?

The conspirators plan was to declare King James' eldest daughter, the nine year old Princess Elizabeth, Queen. Their intentions towards the five year old Prince Charles were unclear. They certainly intended to sieze him, but what they would have done with him is unknown. Having him alive could have made him into a rival to his sister the new Queen. Perhaps they would have secretly killed him.

wow! 400 years, and no mention of it on the web, or the TV, it wasn't even an odd-spot in the paper :(

There was a lot about it on the TV over here and in the newspapers. Most nights there was a Gunpowder Plot programme to watch.

Just a touch of irony that it was Elizabeth Stuart's descendents (the Hanoverians) who eventually were brought to the English throne, isn't it?
