I was getting confussed by all the people in the Charles II movie I was watching today, mistresses, children, sisters etc.... so I went to look up the Stuart family tree to make some sence out of it all. Any way I'd just like to mention that Catherine of Braganza, Charles II's wife died exactly 300 years ago on the 31st December 1705. she had a kind of tragic life, I reckon. Charles married her for her large dowary, she had no children and returned to Portugal after Charles' death. |

I also think that Charles loved her. He had an eye for the women and just wanted a good time, I think. It must have hurt her feelings a lot, though. |

Barbara Castlemaine's arrogance alone must've driven the poor woman nuts. Like Mark says, Charles was under a lot of pressure to get him a legitimate heir (considering his plethora of bastards, o the irony) & Catherine couldn't seem to carry to term. She probably had what they'd nowadays term an "incompetent cervix", which, had the medical knowledge been there in the 1600s, could've easily been sutured until she was in labor to keep the weight of the fetus from premarurely dilating it. His need for an heir was even more urgent than Henry VIIIs, considering the anti-Catholic laws & sentiments of the Stuart times, & James II being openly Catholic & the heir presumptive, which could & did lead to trouble for the Stuart line. Tis a pity about Monmouth, I always thought. |
