Article HERE regarding a descendent of Bothwell who is undergoing DNA testing in an effort to bring Bothwell's remains home to Scotland from Denmark.  It says there is a novel out called Lord James which portrays Bothwell in a good light.

Opinions on whether Bothwell was a true servant of the Scots Crown, or just a flaming opportunist?

The reason MQOS initially placed so much trust in Bothwell was because he was such a loyal servant to Mary of Guise during her term as Regent.  I think given how much the Scots loved a good regency LOL & the way the Scots lords stabbed each other in the back constantly to obtain power, it may have been a little of both....Bothwell may have started out a good servant of the Crown, but perhaps the temptation to tun the joint himself once Darnley was out of the picture proved to be too much for him?

There is a very romanticized version portrayed in the movie, Mary, Queen of Scots.  In reality, I suppose that we will never know.
