A World War II veteran has approached the Criminal Cases Review Commission to grant a pardon to Anne Boleyn 469 years after she was beheaded for treason and witchcraft. He also wants her remains exhumed from the Tower of London and reburied next to her daughter, Elizabeth I, in Westminster Abbey. It is by far the oldest case the CCRC has been asked to review.

LOL Mark....you beat me to it...was just coming in to paste the story...here it is:

Veteran begs Anne Boleyn's pardon
By David Sapsted
London
April 2, 2005

A Battle of Britain veteran wants the British Home Secretary to pardon Anne Boleyn, almost 500 years after she lost her head.

George Melville-Jackson, 85, a former wing commander who won the Distinguished Flying Cross, is calling on Charles Clarke to pardon Henry VIII's second wife because she was "obviously innocent" of the adultery, incest and witchcraft that led to her being beheaded in 1536. Mr Melville-Jackson also wants her remains moved from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey to lie alongside those of her daughter, Queen Elizabeth I.

"Ideally, I would like her to be posthumously declared not guilty of the crimes she was convicted of because a pardon only means that you are being excused the crimes you have committed," Mr Melville-Jackson said.

"But I got a barrister's opinion, and it seems that we would not be able to go court to get a judicial review because, after nearly 500 years, there was not much of a chance of being able to come up with new evidence. So a pardon is the next best thing."

Mr Melville-Jackson, a keen amateur historian, admits that he first "fell in love" with Anne Boleyn during history lessons as a boy. He wrote to Buckingham Palace, which sent his request to the Home Office. He is still waiting for a reply.

"I have always felt that Anne Boleyn suffered a great injustice, but I don't know why, this late in life, I have decided to do something about it," Mr Melville-Jackson said.

"I just woke up one morning and thought, 'Damn it, I'm going to give it a go'. I know there are lots of other cases of injustice in this world, but Anne Boleyn was such a wonderful and gifted woman.

"She did great things for this nation... Yet she was so unjustly treated, and she's lying in a criminal's grave. She deserves better than that. I know I am probably butting my head against a brick wall, but I will go on doing so until I die."

Bravo! That's where she should be, with her daughter. Poor Anne's life was so manipulated from the cradle, first her parents and then Henry spots her and ruins her life with Percy. I just wonder why someone hasn't come up with this before now....Judy

Here's a scan that was in The Melbourne Age on the 2nd April. I'm so glad I spotted it!

I know it's says exactly the same as what Greenslevees wrote above, but its to small to read, but you might be interested anyway...

It's unlikely to happen though because if he succeeded it would open the floodgates to the dozens of people unjustly condemned over the centuries. The list is endless.

I see your point, Mark, but is there really that many people living now who would take up the cause for others unjustly executed? Anne's is special and I can see her getting special considerations. Also, look how many were executed and not properly buried...Judy

There were alot of people unjustly executed during the reigns of Henry VIII, Mary Tudor, Edward and Elizabeth.  Alot of religious persecution both Catholic and Protestent.  I read the book, "The Other Boleyn Girl" , and in that book, Anne is not presented in the saintly way some of you have described.  I'm glad I wasn't born during that era.  They would have probably burned me at the stake .

I don't see Anne as being saintly in any way, but I do see her as a victim of the people around her. She became what they made her, but I don't think she was guilty of the charges against her that she was beheaded for, in the least! Where else should she be except with her daughter? And even if the charges were true that is where she should be to my line of thinking. Would anyone in these times say where or where not Princess Diana's ashes should go? She committed adultry and told the world, but was given the honor she should have in death....Judy

This is really interesting, and I for one am surprised no one has thought to do this yet.  Anne may have been a few things but guilty of what she was accused of  isn't one of them.  I don't really think people made her the way she was though.  She was very outspoken and angered a lot of people at court, and these are the ones who plotted her fall.  I think Henry expected her to change after he married her.  It was her boldness, determination and outspokeness that he fell in love with, and after marriage he grew tired of.

I've heard nothing about it since, so presumably his attempt failed.
