Lock of Catherine Parr Hair Makes £2,160

January 16th, 2008

As the only wife to survive Henry VIII, Catherine Parr (1512-1548) has always had a lucky streak. This good fortune continued as a lock of her hair sold for £2,160 - over ten times its pre-sale estimate- in the Gentleman’s Library sale at Bonhams, New Bond Street, London.
After much bidding in the room the blond lock of hair eventually sold to a gentleman with a special connection to the royal lady. The buyer, Charles Hudson lives on an estate in Worcestershire that was once given to Catherine Parr as a present by her husband King Henry VIII. Mr Hudson said that he was delighted to be able to bring the lock of hair back to its rightful home.

Anyone know how much that is in US dollars, about?

In the original post it states BLOND lock of hair.  Blond????  Her hair wasn't blond!

The original post also says that Catherine was the only wife to outlive Henry....did they forget about good old Queen Anne (the King's beloved "sister")of Cleves?

LOL  I didn't notice the "only wife to outlive him" until you pointed it out.  Here's Catherine Parr's picture, & we do know it's her because her name is on it:

OK bad scan, but she still doesn't look blonde to me either.

Wonder if it's someone else's hair entirely & the buyer got rooked?   I wasn't aware of her tomb being opened since like the 1700s.  Wasn't it Samuel Johnson who bussed her decayed corpse then & went about boasting that he had kissed a queen?

That post came right from the auction's site....never noticed the flub either.  Mayhap they thought Anne of Cleves didn't count because she was divorced

Yeah, take a good look at the portrait in post #6.

Even if you take into consideration for some darkening of the portrate due to age, there is no way you get to her having blond hair!

So it makes one wonder just who's hair they auctioned.

That novel I just read, The Sixth Wife by Suzannah Dunn, the author had an afterward in which she discussed Catherine's several  exhumations (once they even put her back in upside down as the laborers were all drunk LOL).  She states that in the 1700s a lock of Catherine's AUBURN hair was snipped & preserved.  NOT blonde as the auction house says.  Methinks tisn't Catherine Parr's hair after all & some peep got rooked

Now I want to find out what was done to Catherine's corpse that over 200 years later it still had hair   I would think it would have decomposed by then?  Anyone know about such morbid stuff?

I have seen pictures of corpse, and some in the movies, some have had their hair still in place or laying around the skull...Also have heard the finger nails keep growing after death, but that could just seem so, from the skin aroud the nail drying out.

I read someplace recently that hair & fingernails growing on a corpse is just an illusion & it really doesn't....tis the shrinkage & drying up of the skin that makes it appear that way, like you said.

I think hair is one of the last things to decompose, so you could have a skeleton with hair all around the head.

Wonder if that's because hair is basically pure protein?
