What does everyone think of his portrayal of a young Henry VIII?

I actually received the Winstone series DVD as a gift, but I haven't watched it yet.  There was some commentary when it first came out, that his portrayal was laughable because of the "common", almost Cockney accent the actor used as Henry

I really gotta think if I am done before pressing SEND LOL  I also meant to say, the actor who played Buckingham in The Tudors series....now, wasn't HE more of a Henry VIII type than JRM?

He had the stature and the coloring, that's for sure.  Maybe not the charisma though.

I just enjoy it for what it is; a drama/soap opera!  It shouldn't be taken seriously, but it's entertainment, showtime style! :)

RoyalKaren, I understand what you are saying but the problem is that they are claiming it is historical.  There are more inaccuracies in the series than accuracies!  The actual events are entertaining enough on their own.  Some of the portrayals (such as having his sister marrying into Portugal) are so far from fact that they are niether funny nor entertaining.  His sister Mary married Louis XII of France and his sister Margaret married James IV of Scotland.  Why didn't they pick one of those instead of Portugal?

For those of us who are well aquainted with this era this series has been very frustrating.  For those who know little to nothing of this era, they are being given much misinformation.  It's like a series about the American Revelution and instead of Washington crossing the Delaware, he crosses the Mississippi !!

One more thing, RoyalKaren, please do not respond from your email as it transfers a lot of other stuff to the post in addition to your comments.  Thanks.

Yes, the email posting thing IS in our Group Guidelines page HERE.  If you stay in your email, not only do you not see what a mess it makes on the boards to post from there & how potentially dangerous it can be when it drags along members' &/or managers' email addys with it, you also miss new things going on in the group as MSNs email delivery is not what you could call reliable a lot of the time.

The bit where Margaret SMOTHERS her elderly spouse with a pillow (in about 10 seconds; apparently Margaret was also a secret bodybuilder to have THAT much strength) is just unbelievable!  Louis died quietly in his bed; James was killed at Flodden Field; neither of them was murdered by anyone, let alone their wife!  What irks me so much about this series is that many fansites have sprung up where the young members (probably the target audience for Showtime, ages 18-25) who've never opened a Tudor book in their lives BELIEVE THIS IS TRUE HISTORY.  I think it's irresponsible of Showtime to not slap disclaimers all over this thing so that the uneducated will at least understand that this is merely entertainment & NOT the real story of what happened.

Greensleeves...I would just like to point out to you (with all due respect) that Ray Winstone doesn't have an "almost" cockney accent....he HAS a cockney accent! I do know what you mean about him though...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm really beginning to be sorry I brought up JRM and posted to your board at all!  I understand what everyone is saying and I agree that there are discrepancies, but why the whippin'???!!!!

I joined this group to educate myself further on the facts of Tudor history.  The only book I've read is Alison Weir's book "The Six Wives of Henry VIII."  I'm still learning and up until now was excited about this group.  Maybe, I'm not worthy?

Karen...I'm new here also and just finding my way too. Keeping reading Alison Weir, she is a good biographer and very readable. I have enjoyed all her books and I have read most of them. You are as worthy as anyone else...

Well, I have read Eleanor of Acquitaine, Elizabeth 1, The Princes in the Tower, Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley, Henry VIII and his Court. I have also read David Starkey, Antonia Fraser and many others. I love history in general and Tudor history in particular.

I think Ray Winstone is HOT!  Accent and all.  The Showtime version is really not so good.  It makes the ladies of the time seem a bit slutty, espcially Anne Boleyn.  The actor who plays Henry is miscast.  The part is way to big for him.  He just doesn't have the looks or charisma.

RoyalKaren,
Don't be sorry that you brought JRM & restarted our trashing of "The Tudors"!  Did you see the news article yesterday that a survey of 3000 British teenagers & their knowledge of history by the Telegraph showed that 20% thought Sir Winston Churchill was a fictional character??
Thought to be fictional:
Richard the Lionheart - 47%
Florence Nightingale - 27%
Thought to be real
King Arthur - 58%
Robin Hood - 51%
Sherlock Holmes - 58%
Eleanor Rigby - 47%

I think this brings home the fact that we, as people, are much more visually oriented & tend to absorb the thing we view as what is true.  Think about it - how many movies have there been about Robin Hood or King Arthur?  And they're more fun to watch than a bio of Sir Winston or Florence Nightingale.  Although I cannot explain Eleanor Rigby - perhaps the name 'sounded familar' to those responding to the survey so they thought she was a real person.

Anyway - this study explains why I get upset when history is mangled in the process of making entertainment.  There are a few folks who will see a movie or read a 'fictional' historical novel that will inspire them to check out non-fiction by Weir, Starkey, et all (and learn that they, too, have their biases, but at least report the known facts rather than condensing & making stuff up!)  But most folks will watch & assume it's the way things were and never learn anything further.   In fact, most people's opinion of Richard III is forged by Shakespeare's quill (like that phrase!) and we forget that ol' Will was writing for entertainment (much like the wretched "The Tudors").

And, as we usually say "the truth is so interesting, why change it??!"

Yesm peeps forget Shakespeare's Richard III was written in the Elizabethan era, hence to please the queen, whose grandpappy defeated RIII @ Bosworth & gained the throne for the Tudors, naturally Will's quill LOL scratched out an evil, deformed, misshapen hunchback king when he was nothing like <waits for Mark to come by & glare sternly at the Ricardian element ROFL>

I'm doing just that as you speak.

The standard of historical knowledge today is appalling. It's got a lot to do with "making history relevant" which means teaching about Hitler or the slave trade. Fortunately the Tudors are still on the curiculum, but ask anyone under 40 about King Stephen and the Empress Matilda and they'll think they're characters out of Harry Potter.
