The lucid dream state
Inducing a lucid dream.
You will need an assistant. He is required to come into your bedroom every half hour after 6 am (where there is much dreaming sleep), potter about, say a few words at normal volume, then leave. Whenever you think that your assistant has entered teh bedroom, you must instantly conduct certain "state assessment tests" - no matter how sure you are that you are really awake. This is important, as while you are sleeping, your mind may dwell on the anticipated event and you will dream that the assistant has entered the room - this is called False awakening.
The dream state can be detected by attempting to switch on a bedside lamp. This is teh Primary Indicator, If this does not work, suspect strongly that you are dreaming. Listen carefully. Are teh noises as they should be at that time of morning? Attempt to push your hand through the wall, or try to float, or to change objects that you are looking at. If you are then out of bed, jump off a chair. Do you float down? If you find yo are dreaming, cover your dream eyes and 'will' yourself to a special location, or simply explore your surroundings. You will, after all, be able to walk through walls.
If you cannot find a willing assistant, then there are other techniques to help promote a lucid dream. The main priciple, however, is to learn to stir critical awareness while you are in a dream. Habit can be a great help in this. Stephen la Borge, a lucid dreamer and foremost researcher, suggests asking yourself several times during your waking day whether or not you are dreaming. As this becomes habitual, you may find yourself, before too long, asking the same question while dreaming.
Another approach is to manipulate your sleeping pattern. Try setting your alarm a couple of hours earlier than normal. When it goes off, get up. move around, read or engage in some mundane activity., then go back to sleep at the time you normally awake. This Break-near-Waking disturbs teh last R.E.M of teh sleep cycle, which is teh longest and strongest. Afterwards you will fall back into a powerful dream state - the perfect conditions for a lucid dream to arise, and so is controllable as if you are in a waking state.
In general the sense of movement through a 3D tunnel tyoe image often heralds the onset of a lucid dream. This 'tunnel' inage is also common in OOBE's and near death experiences. The image can take on many forms - passages, straight roads, corridors or lines and rows of anything whatsoever, even a path through a wood.
The tunnel image is said to shift teh person's perspective completely into the "hallucinations" - as opposed to teh brain adding hallucinatory content to an image.
