BATHS
A most pleasurable way of using essential oils is in your daily bath, as this has a theraputic effect on both mind and body.
Choos one or a combination of two or three essential oils, using a total of UP TO 8 drops.
A morning soak will refresh and revitalise you for the day ahead. Bathing at night time will help to give you a restful nights sleep provided you use the relaxing and sedative oils.
FOOT BATHS
When a bath is not available or convenient, foot baths can be very helpful. Add UP TO six drops of oil to a bowl of warm water and soak you feet for 10 minutes.
HOT AND COLD COMPRESSES
Compresses are an effective way of alleviating many conditions. For a large area, add approx. 5-8 drops of essential oil to a basin filled with hot or cold water. For a small area add 2-4 drops. Aggitate the water to help disperse the oils evenly. Place a cotton flannel or hankie on top of the water, which will collect the floating oil. Gently squeeze out any excess water and apply to the affected area. Wrap a towel or bandage round the area and leave until the compress reaches body temperature, then repeat the process. A hot compress is effective for rheumatic, menstrual, back or abdominal pains, and urinary problems such as cystitis. Abcess, earache and toothache can alos benefit. Use a cold compress for sunburn, headache, varicous veins and bruises. It will also help to reduce inflammation caused by sprains and to alleviate the pain of hot and swollen areas.
VAPORIZATION AND ROOM FRESHENERS
Essential oil burners, sometimes called vaporizers, are available in all shapes and sizes. You simply add water and approx. 15-20 drops of your chosen essential oils, depending on the size of the room, additional oils can be added.
STEAM INHALATION
Inhalation is a method of introducing essential oil to the lugs via the nose and throat. This can be beneficial for respiratory problem, sinus congestion, colds, flu, coughs, catarrh and sore throats. This method can be used once or twice daily. Add approx 6 drops of a combination of one, two or three oils to a bowl of near-boiling water. Lean over the bowl and cover your head with a towel. This is also very effective for clearing the poors of the face. It is not advisable for you to use steam inhalation if you have psoriasis, eczema or broken veins. Nor is it advisable to use steam inhalation during an asthma attack.
Inhalation can also be used by placing a few drops of oil on a hankie and inhaling it throughout the day. This is an effective way to releive travel sickness and nausea. The same method can be used for keeping alert for long journeys, or the hankie can be placed by your pillow to help you to sleep.
