My tiel is about 1 1/2 years. I just noticed him eating his droppings the other day.  It is not every day he does this.  I try to keep the grate on the cage floor clean.  Does this indicate a mineral or vitamin deficiency?  He has a mineral block on the side of his cage which he eats.  I feed him Kaytee rainbow pellets and also fortified seed mix.  He mostly eats the pellets and fresh broccolli, carrots, asparagus, spinach, lettuce, apple,  lots of variety.   Still concerned.... any input?  Pretty sure this is a male/talks lots and whistles songs.

thanks.

If memory serves me correctly, eating the droppings is a sign of a vitamin or mineral deficiency.  You need to discuss this with your avian vet and testing may need to be done.

It is called coprophagy and many many animals do this. It's disgusting for us to see it but it is normal. Vets can prescribe a foul tasting med for dogs to make their feces taste too bad to do it. From stuff I read somewhere it won't hurt them. Some say they are trying to clean up their area. Others say they see us cleaning it up and are copying us.  Heaven only knows what the real cause is.
Do call your vet. They may have a simple answer to relax you about it.

Thanks for all the input.  He seems only to do this in the a.m. with his a.m. droppings, which are alot thicker and larger.  I have a call in to the vet and am waiting for call back.  Tiel seems fine otherwise.  His playful self.

Thanks.

Although rabbits and cockatiels are completely different, they eat there 'presents' because they don't get all the nutrients through the first digestion, so they go in for seconds.

But that's normal with rabbits... I havn't heard of any cockatiels eating their own poop before...

Apart from now, of course!
