Ok so he didnt want to go in the cage! Did he have to bite me! He wasn't fluffed up, seemed happy to want to come to me, actually put his leg out for me to have him Step up on my finger. He was ok at this point. Go to open door wider and bam - he grabs me right below my thumb. So... my husband always says, don't pull away let him hold on that way you won't bleed he just wants to hold on!! WRONG! He wanted to bite me to show me he didnt want to go in his cage! Smarty pants Clouseau is!!! I am still in pain when I move my thumb but of course we still love them!!!! Next time, I am pulling away!!!!

Now if my husband bit me I won't talk to him for days!!!! LOL ......

Patti

Well crud....I bet that hurt!  I forget what kind of bird Clouseau is....but it doesn't matter....big or small...all the bites hurt!  Especially when you aren't expecting it.

I sure hope your hubby doesn't bite you.  lol

Ouchies!! So sorry you got a bite!

Actually, Patti, the advice I've been given is to push INTO the bite rather than just sitting there and taking it. It's harder for them to maintain their grip if you are pushing towards them. If you pull away, you risk having their beak rip your skin, and that can be a lot nastier than "just" a bite. So please, try not to pull away, as that just makes your injury worse!

I just wrote what Abby said and MSN ate the darned thing. Think ahead every time you start to pick him up. Not with fear, just so you remember and he doesn't surprise you.
Springtime hormones are doing this and many of us will get a bite over the next couple of months.
If he continues, tell us. I have another protection if he keeps this up.

Hi, Clouseau is an African Grey. Apparently he doesnt want me to put him in his cage anymore. He wants to stay on my hand and be with me. When I start to put him in, he starts to fluff up and start to put his head down. My Clue- he is mad so I don't and I call for my husband. He steps up and goes in. I know I shouldnt do this cuz he knows, but it beats getting bit and I am sure it is a stage he is going thru.

Great advise on pushing in rather than pulling away. My skin always gets rips and boy does it hurt!!

What happens when you push in is that they can't completely close their beaks and they release.  Actually it's more of a push in and down a bit, doesn't have to be hard. They learn fast to not do it. My greys haven't drawn blood in years (unless they get a lip, and that would be my fault for putting that lip there )
I've also got the macaws, and that's a bigger beak... works for them too!

This article from Winged Wisdom goes into some of the reasons for bites and how to avoid them.

Here is our solution to going into cage bites with Twiggy.  She calls it her *Go-y*  She steps onto it when she goes into or out of her cage and takes a ride into ther cage.    When we first tried it we made a big deal with lots of cheers and dancing and sounds effects when she would ride in and out of the cage.  She originally called it her *Gozintagoezouta* but has since shortened it to *Go-Y*  No bites since we started using it.  di

Great idea on the rope on the door. He tried again to get me, but my husband came to the rescue. I really think it is hormonal due to time of year, but anything that will work not to get bit is worth a try!

Max can't stand when I touch inside of his cage either.  He doesn't bite like that but he sure nips!  or when i'm cleaning his mess of the floor, he comes down and pulls at my hair.

i've noticed that when he bites onto my finger, it helps to bend it and flex my 'finger muscles' (not sure if they even exsist, but thats what i'll call em) and pull him toward me....it doesn't hurt that way and he always lets go......it's been about 2-3 weeks since he's done this though, and only when he's cranky and tired.  i also will pull him in for a kiss if he's got my finger, he will ease up and make his big kisses sounds.......turns something that would be "NO MAX!" to fun kisses.....I'm so glad he's finally stopped doing that though *knock on wood* lol
