I just bought a yellow canary.. looks scard for the past two or three days.  Hasn't looked happy.. should I buy him (Willie) a friend so I will then have two?  Shouldn't a canary be perky and singing?  He is guaranteed a singer and I heard him sing in store.  Not here though.. I'm sad b/cuz I think he is sad.  What to do?  He has a big cage especially made for canaries/finches with lots of room to spread his wings but all he does is sit on perch in front of his food!  I need help or suggestions.  He is placed on my dinning room table with half sun and half shade...  house temperature is 73 degrees.  What am I doing wrong?  Why isn't he happy?   Dorothy

Have you seen him eat or drink?
Are his feathers fluffed up?
Is he making any sounds at all?
Do you cook with teflon?
Do you use a cinvection /microwave oven?
Do you have plug-in air fresheners or use air freshening sprays?
Are you feeding him the same feed he was eating where you got him from?

Just a few questions off the top of my head.  let me know the answers and maybe I can help you.   di

As in any bird it takes time for them to be comfortable. It took my singer a few weeks. I had 30 days to return him if he didnt sing so after two weeks I bought the canary album cd and started playing it every morning well feeding and cleaning his cage. He began to sing the very first day I played it. He also loves broccli and kale as well as chunks of apples. They  also like a shallow bowl to bath in. It took him several weeks to discover he liked bathing but I never gave up trying, I put clean water daily in the bowl and he eventually discovered it. Canaries dont normally mind being an only bird in the cage and will not always sing if paired up. Give him more time.

Yes dislater.. he eats and drinks but mostly EATS..
There are a few times I saw his feathers puffy, but not lately.
No he doesn't make any sounds.. just sits and eats all day.
I only cook with All-Clad pots and pans.. no teflon.
My microwave is in my kitchen... not a cinvection and my kitchen is more than three rooms away from his cage.
No air-fresherns used.
I only bought the feed that the salesperson recommended. Plus some song food.. I have given him bits of hard boiled eggs, apples and broccoli and he seems to really enjoy them all. He did "sort of" sing yesterday a bit for less than a 1/2 hour.. but he did attempt to sing for the first time. Maybe he was just "stressed" out with my purchasing him and had to get use to his new enviorment. I don't know but all he does it eat, eat eat. Oh, he also is muching on the bottom of his cage which I've covered with wood pellet bedding and litter for small birds and small animals - 100% natural. It was what the pet store lined the bottom of their cages with so that's why I bought it instead of graveled paper. Good idea I thought but I see he likes to munch of it and it appears to me that he's making "Like Sawdust" out of them. There are little spots of Like Sawdust piles in three of the corners of his cage. Is that strange??? I don't know if he's actually eating it or just pecking on it until he breaks it up. Just wondering... He doesn't appear to be actually "sick" but just is very quiet and always eating-not much activity from my little Willie - I always thought canaries should be a little happy pet jumping and singing on and off throughout the day.. my house is a bright airy home and he can look outside and see the other birds activities outside and he can also hear them chirping but still no concern except to keep eating. OK I'll give him more time.. he can have all the time in the world as long as I'm convinced he's not really sick. He took a bath in his "drinking cup" two days ago but he has a fresh bath-bowl daily placed inside his cage!!! Funny to watch him bath in his itsy bitsy drink water.. He did get to soak himself though.. really funny. He eats ALL day.. yes I've given him pieces of broccoli and apples too along with a dandoline. I see now he is munching and making sawdust like from his wood pellets which is a bedding and litter for small birds that I've used as his liner of the bottom of his cage. That's what the store was using so I bought the same stuff they had on the bottom of their cages. Sales person said it is very good for them but I'm wondering if he's actually eating it or just breaking it up into piles of sawdust. I see little piles of it everywhere in his cage? Any suggestions Dorothy

Dorothy, It sounds like you are taking good care of your new friend. I have never owned a canary, but have read that they like some form of entertainment in their cages. Does he have any toys in his cage to play with. He may be chewing the shavings out of boredom. If he doesn't have toys ask the pet store where you bought him to recommend something for him. I think the eating is fine, much better than not eating at all and it sounds like you are supplementing him with healthy fruits and veggies, not all seeds (which can make them overweight). I would just be patient with the singing. I'll bet he is still adjusting to his new home. When I brought my cockatiel home, he was quiet for almost two months before he started vocalizing. So just enjoy his antics (bathing, which is something canaries love also) and beauty and hopefully in time he is serenade you. Oh, and I think you can purchase a tape or CD with canary songs that may prompt him to sing. Good luck with your little one.

I would consider removing the bedding and just using plain old newspaper just to be on the safe side. You said you have seen him occasionally fluffed up, I just want to let you know that it doesnt always mean there sick with a canary they do sometimes fluff up when they are relaxed or to keep warm. Now if he is on the floor and puffed then I would be concerned. Since he has shown an interest in bathing you really should put a shallow bowl in the bottom of his cage so he can really enjoy it:)by the way the canary cd's really do work my canary is singing up a storm now.

I would definitely get rid of the cage litter and switch to newpaper liner and change it daily.  This way you can monitor his poops and he will not be eating the litter and you will have a healthier happier bird.  Offer him a bath at about the same time daily, but be sure to rem,ove the bath dish before he begins to drink from the bath dish.  di

thank you Snowbird!!! Thanks for your input and support. It just "seemed" strange that he is chomping on his pellets and making sawdust out of it. Looks like he is doing a "nesting" thing in all four corners of his cage??? I don't want to hurry him to sing at all... just want him happy and healthy. Dorothy

thanks! I'm happy with him and just want to be sure he is happy and healthy too... he's as cute as a button and I love him so much already. Just wondering why he is chomping on his pellets and making saw dust out of it ~ looks like he is making a "nest" in all four corners. He seems to enjoy doing it so that's why I just let him be and let him do his thing. Do you still suggest I take it out?? Dorothy

Will do Di... thanks for your input and suggestion, I appreciate it. Just wondering though, he seems to be making "nests" in all four corners of his cage with those pellets chomped into sawdust by him. He also seems to really enjoy doing it??? I'd hate to take away something he enjoys doing but then again if it's dangerous for him or not healthy.. I'd do it anyway. Thanks again, Dorothy

Hi again Dorothy, I was thinking the same thing as you, that he is probably enjoying chomping on his shavings. (although I agree it is better for him healthwise to line his cage with paper, avoid comics as the dyes may be bad for Willie if he chews and injests them). That is why I suggested getting him some toys for his cage at the pet store. Get him something with soft wood or pieces of rawhide, etc. that he can chew on.  Not (just) those plastic toys. Also he might light something with a small bell. Like I said I have never owned a canary but I have read (on the internet) that they enjoy toys and entertainment in their cages, so ask your pet store to recommend something appropriate for a canary. You don't want him to get bored in his cage. There is something called "shredders" that they make in small sizes for cockatiels/ budgies, etc. That may be something Willie would enjoy. Again, find a knowledgeable person to help you pick something out. Or maybe someone on the board who has canaries could offer an idea. Type in "canary care" in your search engine and you will gets lots of informative articles. Sorry this is so long. Good luck with Willie.

I have a small nest hanging in a corner of my canaries cage.Even if he is a male he loves picking at it and at night he sets on the edge of it to sleep. I also have a bell and a small rope and wood toy.I have never seen him play with the toys but he does  like picking at the nest. Another thing he loves that keeps him happy is grass cafe. It is a small pot of a wheat grass I belive that is made especially for birds. It takes a few days to grow and you can get it at most of your larger pet chain stores. Do you know for sure your canary is a male?
