Hi everyone I am a newbie here on the group. I am glad I joined. I have a pair of canaries who are do to hatch eggs yesterday. Today the hen wont sit on her eggs anymore. She was very dilegent for the last 13 days. 3 out of 4 are fertile. The day they were do to start hatching (the day before yesterday) One of the fertile eggs ended up on the floor of the cage. The baby was dead. Can someone please give some advise asap so we don't lose any of these little darlings! Thanks in advance, Noelle |

I dont tink this is the case The night we brought them home, they acted like they were being rescued. We have complety spoiled them and they are so happy and comfortable. THey immediatly started loving each other and laying eggs. I was surprized that they would have even layed these eggs so late in the season. Thanks so much for your interest. I so appriciate the feed back! Noelle |

I have the humidifier on next to the cage a big pot of boiling water on the stove. I have hand reared babies before and it is hard. It's been a reallly long time sice I've done it. I have three little girls who are depending on me to take care of them. my daughters ages are 3, 7 and 9. I'm not so sure I am willing to give up on them. We'll just have to play it by ear. I am hoping the hen will have a change of heart. I'll let you know how it is going at the end of the day. Thanks everyone for the wonderful feedback and advise. Noelle |

I don't have any feedback as I'm just a newbie, but I'm fascinated by your story and hope you have time to check back later and update us all on how it's going. Best of luck to you! |

Noelle, with their history, The parents are probably lacking a great deal of essential nutrients in their previous diet and that is causing the embryos to be less hearty. After a winter of a good healthy diet and living in clean conditions, you may well have vigorous young early next spring. Wishing you the best. di |

Sorry, Noelle, but we can't put people's names in here for liability reasons. I am reposting your message 8 without the name of the woman. Abby Ahhhhhh, That's not what I wanted to hear but, that sounds like good advise. I used to breed canaries 20 years ago and never had this problem. I bought these from a woman who was running a bird mill and the humane society raided her. The conditions were terrible and I felt like I was doing a rescue more than an investment. Later I heard from a bird store owner that this womans birds were just that. They were weak and they never strived. This makes me so sad. She had thousands of birds all over her house. There were feces on thefloor the place was disguting! We live in Phoenix AZ and just a little personal info: Her name is ____________. This seems like an awesome group. I am so glad I found it. Thanks for your quick reply. I was feeling paniced. At least now I I will feel like God will do the rest. I'll keep you posted. ((((((((((((big hugs)))))))))) Noelle | |

I am sorry, It felt wrong to me when I wrote it. I had just watched the Utube messaage about the neglected cocatoo on the front page and it made me angry. I apologize. To catch you up to date, My hubby and I went and made an incubator before the kids got home from school. We are going to give it a try. Two of the eggs look like they are hatching now and the other two don't lok viable. It's in Gods hands, that is how we explained it to the kids. So wish us luck. Hopefully we'll be up every two hours in a couple of days. LOL Thanks for everything, Noelle |

Good luck with the baby canaries Noelle. It is hard feeding baby birds, but will be so worth it if they survive! Kathy |

Well everybody, Thank you for you kind words and thoughts and suggestions. The little guys never made it all the way out. They were just to weak. Now they are off flying in birdy heaven. I hope they have a wonder time there. Thanks for all of your support. The mama bird is doing great. The stress is gone off her and she is taking good care of herself. Plus she's getting quite spoiled. See ya on the boards, Noelle |

Such a sad outcome, I'm sorry. In order to keep Mom from breeding and laying eggs again, I would like to strongly recommend that you immediately seperate her and the male into seperate cages. That way you cn feed her up and let her hormones become well regulated and increase her nutrition level before breeding season starts next year. di |

How sad. Next time the pair and their babies will be strong and healthy after a winter of good food and clean living. Blessings, Annie |

Aaawwwww....such heartbreaking news. I tell you what....you two worked so hard at giving them the best chance possible I've got to give you a hand. Maybe ya'll can find some good material and get ready for the next event. You'll have everything on hand just for this kind of happening and will be more relaxed.....if that's possible. On the sidebar there's some links to sites and if you want to...just type in hatch birds..or raise parrots.....that should bring up a lot of sites to check out. I'm sorry I couldn't help you with your problem...but I want to welcome you to the greatest site I know about. Be glad to have another bird to perch on the branch here! |
