I have a 24x24 cage that looks like the King's cage model #134 for Rica. It had two uprights holding a perch for the play top. Note HAD.

A few days ago, I was sitting here at the pc and I heard a small clank, then 2 crashes with flapping and growling. I looked up and Rica had her head stuck in the upright. Yes, she is ok.

The small clank was Rica dropping the wingnut holding perch to the upright. The 2 crashes were the perch falling and the upright falling out and landing on Nikon's cage that is next to and up against Rica's. She was on the outside of the upright so fell with it and landed with her feet on Nikon's cage. The upright was at a 45º angle and she couldn't get free. I'm not sure if her head got stuck before or after it fell, but her head was through the upright and had slid up past the part that was sticking out (1) and was trapped in the small area at the top (2).

I was really lucky that I was right here, that Nikon's cage was close enough to catch her & the upright and that she fell out and not in, as she might have smacked her beak on the fallen perch. With the weight of the upright, she might have been really hurt instead of just ruffled.

The uprights are permanently off the cage now. I'll figure out a better play perch later.

OMG, Erika!!! It is sure fortunate for Rica that you were right there, and that she fell in such a way that she didn't get throttled! Thanks for the warning! I'll be checking my cages out very carefully tomorrow.

All the scroll work has always bothered me on the cages Erika and thank goodness you were there...

I had one of the flock get her leg caught very tightly in the corner of a piece of scroll when she was climbing down to the shelf below to get to the bag of foods and goodies on the shelf attached under her cage....

That thing went in the trash immediately.... too much of a risk.....

Lucky Rica that you were there and heard the fall. My scarlet macaw got his leg band caught on one of prong-y parts of a scroll and he chewed his toe off. He had two surgeries to repair the damage and was, of course, missing a toe from then on. I was at home but didn't see his struggle. Amy noticed him as she walked past the room.
I always caution against the scroll-y cages when I see one.
I hope she isn't terrified now.
Annie

That had to be frightning to both you and the bird Iso glad there was a happy ending  I was reading about another bird that wasn't so lucky and got her  head stuck when she unlatched her playtop and pushed her head up through it when she tried to pull herself back the play top tightened around her neck and when the owner came home her beloved bird was hanging by her neck. she was so upset she had to totaly get rid of that cage because everytime she saw it all she could see in her mind was her baby hanging there she said she will never buy a dometop cage with a playstand ever again that its much safer to have a separate play stand for them they are just to smart and and can learn to unlatch anything.   Pat

I'm so glad Rica is okay!  A couple years ago one of my cockatiels caught her toe in the corner of a cage where the two sides meet.  She was climbing down the side of the outside of the cage and caught her toe in the gap between the sides.  At the top it was wider than toward the bottom.  She lost her toe, but survived the experience, so I felt really fortunate.  That cage is now in storage, never to be used near my birds again!  Kathy

How lucky for both of you that you were home and right there to catch what was going on.   I hope she has over come her fright and doesn't suffer any lasting affects from that scare.  You can add me to the list of scroll haters.  Both of my girls cages have that same top plus the same scroll work at the bottom of their cages.  Tickles is small enough to get her head through those scroll things with no problem and because of that I have to make sure the grate is near the bottom to prevent her from having access to those areas.  I used to have the grate out so she could play at the bottom because she doesn't like the grate.  However, safety first, fun later.  Ruby has that same thing....I hate it.  If she tried to stick her head through, I'm sure she'd be stuck too.  My cages are very old and I'm not sure how old yours are.  Do they still make cages like these?
