My name is Pam, I'm from Ohio. I just brought home my male SI last week. I also have a Quaker (ornery and adorable), and he's so very different, that's for sure. His sweet gentle ways are a pleasant change. What an amazing and beautiful creature he is! I'm in awe of him. He is a sloppy boy, geesh! I clean my Quaker's cage daily, but the Eclectus, at least 3 or 4 times! He's more work, but I'm so happy to have him. His name is McTavish, and he's still a little shy, but he'll come around. He lets me know if I've gone too far with my affection. I know I need to go easy until he feels more comfortable here in his new home. We also have a Collie, 3 indoor kitties, and an aquarium. The grandkids are a 2 hour drive from me, I need to have critters to shower my love on every day! I'm happy to be a part of your group, I want to learn everything there is to know about this wonderful fid. I'm afraid my petsitter will raise her rate once she gets a load of how much food preparation is involved......gulp.. love&peace~ Pam |

Congratulations on your new little green guy, and welcome to the group! There's several of us who have ekkies here, just ask any kind of question you want and I'm sure at least one of us will try to give you an answer. I love the name McTavish, so you've determined he's a Scottish kind of guy? Guess I've got one of the Irish SI's--my little guy's named Shannon. Yep, they can be food flingers, but they're an Italian mama's dream, they'll eat almost anything once they figure out it's food. I think that some ekkies take a bit longer to warm up to people than some other birds because they like to think things through, weigh all the options before forming an opinion. So don't be surprised if for example you ask him to "step up" and he goes one foot at a time, verrrrryyyy slooooowwwly. One of the fids I'm slave to is a high energy severe macaw, and after spending a half hour or so constantly in motion keeping her entertained it's really nice to be able to sit for a bit with Shannon on my arm or knee and just watch TV or sing songs, or something else that doesn't involve jumping up and down and running around. Betcha the other ekkie owners will be by soon to share their fids with you, too. Nancy and... |

Hi Pam, Welcome. I also have an ekkie. Mine is a British princess, Diana. She's 9 years old now and has been with me since she was about 8 or 10 weeks old. She decided at about age 4 or 5 to get nekkid. Been nekkid ever since. This is before her nekkidness. Also before her beak turned solid black. Annie |

Thanks Annie, I'm sorry poor Diana is nekked, and I hope she turns around soon. She is very pretty anyway what a beautiful tail she has. I must tell you, I read an old post by you to whitewolf where you said you told your children the bird cost $5,000.00, and your husband will have to get a respirator if the bird bothers him. I really belly-laughed! I like your style Annie! .....and Thank you to Nancy, The way you describe Shannon, it's exactly like McTavish ( verrrrrry sloowwwwly) LOL, yeah, he really seems like he is thinking thru every move very carefully. I just thought it was because he's a little uncomfortable yet without previous mama and sibling. He's 6 months, btw, I don't think I mentioned that. You also described me....Italian mama, that's right on. I also have a little Irish in me tho, and the bird has such a magnificent emerald green color, how can I not give him an Irish name? I admit, I'm still a little intimidated regarding the diet, I have read plenty on ingredients and recipes, but no portion measurements. I just give him plenty and after a while what's left over I throw away, but I always keep some pellets for him, which he loves. I'm sorry to say, I don't see your pic in the post you sent. peace&love~ Pam |

MSN must be playing games with us again. I just tried posting another picture and got the dreaded red "X". Shannon will be 4 in June, but I still remember when I brought him home as a 7 month old. We had him in quarantine in our bedroom, and for about a month he didn't make a sound...not a peep. One morning about sunrise for some reason he started making all kinds of sounds, beeps, squeaks, etc. Funny to listen to, we had a hard time pretending we were still asleep. As soon as he saw an eye open, he quit. He's still like that for the most part. Won't talk unless he's got a toy or something between him and me (hiding) or has his head in his food dish, or has his eyes closed. Guess he figures if he can't see me, I can't see him. His best buddy is a sun conure, so while he talks a little, it usually comes out in a gravelly voice. I keep telling him "Talk like Shannon, don't talk like Zonker". I usually end up giving him enough food to satisfy my B&G macaw, but his dish looks so empty if I just put a little bit in there. Guess it's the Italian mama in me that wants to make sure he doesn't go hungry. He's a so-so pellet eater. Some days it doesn't look like he's touched them, some days all I find is crumbs on the bottom of the cage. Love to see pictures of McTavish if you can post some, these green guys are just awsome, aren't they? |

Hi Nancy, I can see the pic now, he's beautiful, of course. It's so funny, he sounds just like McTavish! He will be chatting to himself, and when I walk up to him, he stops. His former mama told me she could hear him and his sibling talking (hello, how ya doin?), but when she entered the room, they'd stop.....too cute. When he mumbles, he sounds like "Blue" from "Blue's Clues"!! It cracks me up! He's starting to play with his toys, it's been a week today that he came here, so that's not bad. I'm working on the talking thing, but not much happenin' there yet. I can pick up my Quaker, Gracee, and smother her with kisses, and I want so badly to do that with him, but I know it will be a while...if ever. I still have a lot of pics to take before I have the roll developed, but soon, I hope, I'll have some of him. Funny, I think there's a striking resemblence between McTavish and Shannon! Thanks Too2 for the welcome! Too's are a most beautiful bird also. Actually, what bird isn't? We did much consideration before settling on the Ekkie, and had it down between Ekkie, Grey, and Too. A tough decision indeed. love&peace~ Pam |
