I noticed that a lot of us garden.  We have flowers and vegitables, despite our chronic pain problems.  We love plants.

So here's where I thought I would put a board just for us.  We can talk about our gardens, and we can talk about tips and tricks to keep ourselves from gettint hurt when we garden.

For example, I buy my dirt by volue, not by weight.  I get a few liters of dirt that's really dry.  Then I bring it home and wet it and put it in pots for potting plants.  That way I'm not buying 40 lb bags that are moist and mostly heavier than 40 lb and they certainly are somthing I can't pick up.

And I use a stool when I garden.  That way I'm not bending and stooping.  Oh I still have to stretch and reach, but you know what?  That's OK.  I'm careful not to twist.  And by the time my back is yelling at me, I can get a pretty good hour or so in of pruning or what ever needs doing.  I can even do some weeding using a short handled hoe.

I have a number of those tools.  They are made with adjustable handles, so they can be used sitting or standing.  I have a hoe, a small rake and a trowel and a weeder like that.  I didn't buy them all at once.  I just bought them as I needed them, over the course of a couple of summers, because they're pretty expensive.  But they're good tools and they don't rust and they really save the back.

OK so there's some tips.  Oh, I do all my gardening in containers, or in raised beds.  That way I don't have to bend over very much at all.

Love to all.

Dan

hey Dan,
I have a great tool I got on QVC.  I love it and it has helped me more then I can explain. It's called the D-Weeder. It hooks to your drill. It can be  a cordless drill or a corded one. It's a long metal pole type thing with a metal pin at the bottom. You hook into the drill like a regular drill bit and then you can sit or stand and push the pole into the weed. Then drill it out. then click the reverse button and it will knock the weed off the drill. it's great. It saves me tons of bending and stuff. You might want to check into it. I've even used it from my wheelchair and it has worked great. And it works to also work the soil. It does tons of things. It cost me like 18 bucks I think. I am a huge rose and peony gardener and it helps me tons. Hope it helps you. And by the way. Thanks for making this message group. I love gardening. It's my main source of peace in all this pain.

Dear Dan and fellow gardeners,
I have been an avid gardener for years despite the pain in my body. I have been a member of this group for a few months, and this is the first time I've wanted to participate in any discussion. Sometimes the message boards depress me. Now, gardening can take me out of my body pain ( until I come back to reality!! lol ) I'm getting very excited just thinking spring is almost here. The last 2 weeks the snow has vanished, revealing all of the work that has to be done in the gardens. I have dirt delivered by the truckload and pay the neighbor kid to rake it into place. I sometimes sit on a pillow and use a spade to help me get up. Sometimes I have a wheeled chair that I use,but my back can't tallerate that for long.  I'm interested in modified tools as I get older and have tried the weed extracter you put on the drill. It works like a charm if you are carefull, but it's not the same as having your hands in the earth!! As you can tell I'm having a great day. Thank you for starting this board.
Sam

Hi guys!
I got a "Gopher Grabber" for Christmas, and I think it will be useful in the garden too.
I really want the claw thing my mil has for turing soil.
