In my retirement community we can sign up for 30X30 or larger garden plots with 2 faucets and a tool cabinet that a previous gardener built since 1964.  It costs a dollar a month for water and a key deposit for the gate.  There are a lot of old  mentors there and a real friendly group.  Many of them get free compost from the local dump to soften up the clay soil and I did it once until my wife objected wondering what junk could be in with it so I and my neighbors down the street save leaves and grass in small enough sacks that I can pick up to compost and rototill into my spot.  So far I have raised onions, garlic, many different kinds of squash, broccoli, chard, lettuce and herbs.  I use a kneeling stool and reversabile bench for getting up and down and have to rest up the next day from weeding.  Weeding got so painful that when a neighbor threw away old indoor carpet I cut it into strips for between the veggie rows to stop the weeds.  I have soaker hoses under the plants which also makes for less weeds.

I run the leaves first through my lawn mower to shred them first.  Leaves I vacuumn up get poured on our flower gardens.  I can only lift 8 pounds so adapt by dragging and lifting with my arms one of them on a cane or bench to not increase the pain in my lower back.

Our garden produce has helped us both to lose weight along with water aerobics.

I have lost 90 pounds, 40 of them in the last 4 years.

Your company is great to have this gardening program available. It's a really fantastic way to get out and talk with others as well.

Hey, JP, have you tried black plastic trash bags instead of carpet?  Not only does it keep the weeds out, but it warms the soil, too, so the seeds germinate quickly.  You can punch holes in the plastic for whatever you want to plant with a pencil or awl and eliminate weeding entirely.  (Can you tell I've watched "The Victory Garden" on PBS?)  I know the kind of bench you use, too; I bought one for my mother a few years ago when she had knee replacement surgery.  : )  Congratulations on your terrific weight loss, by the way!

I weeded two rows of garlic today and last week planted some Fava beans.  The rugs are thick and can be picked up to see the mole activities underneath and I can pick up worms to relocate where I wish them.  I do have an area with black plastic and thanks for the tip as I had not specifically thought of that.  I use underground soaker hoses and will have to mark where they are with the wire clips then lay the free rug strips down to walk on that are tougher than the plastic I have available locally. 3 mil. Near my ranch up north they sell 10 mil for wood piles that can last years.  I do use weed cloth and have a supply of it.  I have about 40 sacks of shredded leaves to rototill in when the weather improves and I have 4 compost piles of wire circles.  I add leaves&grass then some dirt then manure then leaves and repeat as the pile goes down. Water when needed also.  I am not able to do the three pile method of forking from one to the next so an old timer in the garden showed me the no work method.  I get composting starter also and dissolve it in a watering can and sprinkle it on also occasionally.

By the house I have a new galvanized trash can with holes poked in the bottom next to an orange tree and sitting on bricks.  I cut up all household refuse in it and have a tight lid and insect killer strip inside.  We eat a banana on our cereal every morning and the peels contain potassium and peelings and everything but meat goes in with layers of manure and leaves.  It goes under the top soil in our house herb garden every spring.  Enuff said for now.

Wow, here you are gardening in January! My backyard has a foot of snow covering it. I can't wait til spring to get out there. I feel really inspired this year to get my front grass free of all crab grass. I should begin buying seed and soil and freshen my memory on the best way to do it.
