In my retirement community we can sign up for 30X30 or larger garden plots with 2 faucets and a tool cabinet that a previous gardener built since 1964. It costs a dollar a month for water and a key deposit for the gate. There are a lot of old mentors there and a real friendly group. Many of them get free compost from the local dump to soften up the clay soil and I did it once until my wife objected wondering what junk could be in with it so I and my neighbors down the street save leaves and grass in small enough sacks that I can pick up to compost and rototill into my spot. So far I have raised onions, garlic, many different kinds of squash, broccoli, chard, lettuce and herbs. I use a kneeling stool and reversabile bench for getting up and down and have to rest up the next day from weeding. Weeding got so painful that when a neighbor threw away old indoor carpet I cut it into strips for between the veggie rows to stop the weeds. I have soaker hoses under the plants which also makes for less weeds.
I run the leaves first through my lawn mower to shred them first. Leaves I vacuumn up get poured on our flower gardens. I can only lift 8 pounds so adapt by dragging and lifting with my arms one of them on a cane or bench to not increase the pain in my lower back.
Our garden produce has helped us both to lose weight along with water aerobics.
I have lost 90 pounds, 40 of them in the last 4 years.
