Cal, you are interested in container gardening? Last year I planted tomatoes and cucumbers in large pots(plastic, fake clay ones), against a wall. They did pretty good. The cherry tomatoes were best, I think the location was not quite sunny enough, this year I am going to try another spot. I put large tomato cages in the pots, and had the cucumber pot by the wall with a frame my husband made for me. It is simply a wooden 6 foot frame with chicken wire stapled (well, attached somehow, I forget how) to it. It leans against the wall on a slant, and the cucumbers climb up and hang down from the chicken wire. He made it for green beans, but I have used it for a few things. I grow herbs in boxes on the rail of the little kitchen landing/veranda. They are also plastic so I can lift them, not too heavy. Strawberries do great in a hanging container. I had them in the ground but they were spreading all over and so I took mine all out a few years ago. I may do some in a pot with some garden netting to protect them from the birds. Birds steal most of them! |

You've really inspired me, Hannah. I'm going to try some, but on a much smaller scale than you. Have you ever grown strawberries in a strawberry pot? Maybe I'll see if I can buy one of those. I know what you mean about the birds. I have two seed bird feeders for them on the patio and a hummingbird feeder. There have been a lot of cats around lately though that occasionally get a bird. Makes me feel terrible but my husband says it's just nature. The bird seed also gets in the lawn and grows and makes him crazy! They're the only pets I have though, so he puts up with it. I'm really itching to get started with the containers. Hope I can go today and get the stuff I need. I'll let you know how it goes. Chevy Gal |

(Please excuse the delete, I noticed a pile of typos in my first try!) Hi Cal I have a strawberry pot, but no strawberries in it. This sounds crazy, but it is full of Hens and Chicks! My mother in law's friend did it, and she loved it and she did one up. I was over there and couldn't get over the uniqueness of it, so she bought me one and I planted it up with hens and chicks. As the babies spread, they reach across the pot, I love it! Being in Canada, I put it in the garage for the winter, so the clay wouldn't be ruined, and they are still growing in there! I am putting it outside next week. I don't have a bird feeder out, just a hummingbird feeder. There are a lot of birds around though because of the ravine back of the yard. My mother in law has a feeder towards the back of her yard, they are her only "pets" too. |
