Looks like I have a torn meniscus in my Left knee.  Poop.  After a Dr. visit, Ortho visit, X-rays and a MRI it doesn't look good.  The Ortho told me point blank if I don't drop a ton of weight I'm going to be crippled in a few short years.  Both of my knees are worn out.  The "tread" inside them is nearly bone-to-bone.  The ortho pressed hard for me to have something done proceedurely to drop a ton.  He even wrote a letter stating I needed it done for medical reasons.

Well my ego's in the crapper.  Depending on the final say-so from the MRI I suspect the Ortho will be sharpenin' up his pocket knife and do some whittlin' on me.  Mabey a skullectomy will fix it all.  I'll draw a dotted line around my neck with a marker and enscribe "cut here".

The arthroscopic surgery for meniscus repair isn't so bad (or so I've seen and heard)....I've actually been in the operating room to observe 4 such surgeries.  They typically take about 30 minutes, and the patient goes home later the same day.  Full recovery takes about 6 weeks, depending on exactly what they do in there.  Unfortunately, being nearly bone on bone makes the surgery less successful.  As the Dr. says, the torn meniscus is only part of the problem. Your knees will feel a whole lot better if there isn't as much weight compressing them down.

Is the MD suggesting a roux- en -y gastric bypass operation for you?  Those can also be done laparascopically, which makes the recovery faster. It's awfully drastic, but you and your doctor get to make that final call together, after weighing out all of your other options (no pun intended!)  I don't think I could manage having my stomach stapled to the size of just a couple ounces.  I would make sure you do a lot of research before going under the knife for this kind of surgery.  If you want help looking up the facts, I'd be glad to help you; but ultimately the final decision is yours.

Best of luck, my friend...and let us know what you choose!

I think that's a wholeheadectomy.  the skullectomy starts just above the eyebrows and goes down behind the head down toward the neck...  Yeah, that's the way it goes.  That way they can get at your brain, ya see, or at least see if ya got one.

Maybe they'll get you a couple new knees.  I love my new knee.  It's taken a real problem and just made it go away.

Well, you're in my prayers, my friend.

Adam, one of our members, Thundur, had the roux-en-y gastric bypass about a year and a half ago; he's lost over 100 pounds, as I recall, and is no longer diabetic and is off almost all blood pressure meds, nor does he need to use a walker to get around anymore. He hasn't regretted the surgery at all! He only wishes he'd done it years earlier. I know he would tell you the same. E-mail me and I'll give you his e-mail address so you can contact him in person, if you like; he'll give you details.

 ADAM,

I HAVE SENT YOU A LOT OF INFORMATION TO YOUR EMAIL ADDY ...WAY TOO MUCH TO INCLUDE HERE ..

I HAD THE RNY GASTRIC BYPASS OPERATION AND MY ONLY REGRET IS NOT DOING IT SOONER..

THE FOLLOWING VERSE COULD BE BETTER BUT PERHAPS YOU CAN GET A SENSE OF VALUE IN WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY FROM THE POEM I WROTE FOLLOWING MY OPERATION. I STILL STAND BY THESE WORDS.

RUE NOT ROUX EN Y

Back in July of two thousand six

My Cardiologist, Doctor Fulop, surmised

my body bulk ... morbid obese

was overly huge in size

and by every medical standard known ...

this was none too wise

He offered up the challenge

of a balloon to insert in my gut

but eventually my new Obesity Doc

Doctor Dent, said "that's a crock"

The only thing we can possibly do

is a laproscopic gastric bypass ...

known as Roux en Y... to you

Sad to say, the waiting list

in Canada, is five years long

So I was sent to the USA

to a Doctor Graber in New York State

who ... had this to say

"Larry old man ... I will make you new

If you opt for this operation

and my rules ... you’ll follow through."

On the thirtieth of March

in two thousand seven

I wrote my will ...

in case of hell or heaven

but I truly believed in a positive way

that all would be right

on this life changing day

I awoke refreshed and quite aware

assured a new lifestyle awaited me there

If only I did what the Doctor said do

The pounds would melt quite quickly away

about at the rate of a pound a day

I could not wait ... to get underway

For a week my diet was liquid

and bland as bland oft is

But soon I had a piece of toast

some porridge and cottage cheese

Protein shakes to aid me mend

and collectively they did please

As had been predicted

a pound was lost each day

and if left that way

I would melt away

in two thousand eight

some time close ...

to the eleventh of May

But this process is effective

for about two hundred days

then plateau becomes your state

and eventually you settle

near your new desired weight

It is a magical process

where your stomach is the size of your thumb

the bypassed upper intestine

no longer capable to absorb

the calories and nutrients that you ate

So consequently and magically

Your body loses weight

What a Fate!

GOOD LUCK ADAM IN MAKING A YRULY LIFE CHANGING DECISION.

LARRY

PS ...

YOU MAY HAVE THE ODD CRAVING ... BUT YOU WILL NEVER AGAIN KNOW HUNGER
