hello again my friends. today i called an internists' office and much to my surprise, i came to realize that she is going to INVESTIGATE me through the doc who just fired me! oh yes, the sec'y. needed basic info over the phone; needed to know what kinds of medical conditions i have, needed to know the name of my last internist......i feel fear rising in my bones even as i type this. WHAT IF she who fired me decides to toss her "opinion" about me to any prospective doctor i try to see? would a doctor DO that to a patient? i can't imagine it being possible, but i guess anything is. i'll try not to borrow trouble!
the sec'y did, however, tell me that she would "get back to me shortly"...meaning like in a short while, meaning like TODAY. i have had no phonecall. i just hope to God this doesn't turn into anything worse than it is. if she tries to block me from other doctors because she is ticked off at me, THAT is insane. i just hope it doesn't happen. |

All you can do is be honest and tell any prospective doctor that your last internist decided she didn't want to keep you as a patient any longer because she felt you needed pain medication and she didn't want to treat you with it. Tell them that injections don't work for you, and if that's the only thing they feel comfortable with, you won't waste your time or theirs. Be up front about the fact that pain medication is the only thing that seems to work for you. Don't be upset or angry; be matter-of-fact and calm. Point out that you've been on this Xodol for 8 years and have reduced the amount you take, but that dose is no longer effective in controlling your pain to any decent degree, and you need more help than it's been providing. Tell the doctor(s) thta you want as close to a normal life as you can get with the least amount of narcotics you can manage, but what you're taking now just isn't cutting it. As Dan pointed out, keeping a daily record of your pain levels, how high your pain is, what TYPE of pain it is (stabbing pain, throbbing, shooting, etc.), whether anything in particular increases or decreases your pain levels such as standing for any length of time, walking, certain types of housework. Show this record to any doctor you see so they know you're serious about keeping track of your pain. If you go in and say "I hurt all the time", that's not too helpful in a clinical sense; but if you tell them your pain averages a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10 most of the time and is worse when you try to vacuum, do dishes, etc., that's helpful. OK?

Figured that might happen, Kalia. I guess doctors don't want to take on 'problem patients', and, if they can find out why their doctor got rid of them, they will. Then they have an 'excuse' not to take them on. Hopefully, they will give you a chance to 'respond' to the "charges"...guess we should call them what they are, huh??? It's a shame we can't do anything about it though.....and we can get rid of our doctor for something they did, or didn't do....but no one cares about that!! Again, the doctors have all the power!!! I hope IF this sec'y comes back and tells you that this doctor will not take you on as a patient, you will be able to find out exactly what your other internist told them about you, as a patient....and you will be able to give YOUR opinion, as well. It sucks!! Hope things work out with this doctor.....and they wil take you on as a patient. Or at least let you get in the door, respond to any 'charges', and tell them YOUR side of the story. Good luck, and please let us know how things are going with this. We're pullling for you!! Dee |

Kalia, Cyndy and Dee make perfect sense. Just be up front and matter-of-fact with any prospective new pain doctor. Tell your story in a no nonsense manner and don't leave anything out, including that your other doctor fired you and the reason. I hope you take the great advice from the two folks here. Makes sense to me. Good luck in finding that great pain doctor. Hugs, Claire |
