Hi crystalsunhflowers; have you considered getting yourself a pair of "TV-Ears"? it attaches to the audio output of your TV set, allows you to completely silence the audio of the TV and the user of the "ears" (earphones) can adjust the volume to his/her own needs without bothering anyone else. we bought 2 sets because i need more volume than my DW whose ears are very sensetive to loud sounds. they work! PS: we got them at Sam's Club which means they are no doubt available at Walmart, too. best of luck.
