Ok Guys,,,have really appreciated your help with meds in the past. Was on Methadone and I thought I was going nuts taking that crap though some like it. Dr Now has me back on OXY's 80 and 40 totalling 440 mg daily. He has added a new one, OPANA 10 mg. for breakthrough...Appears to be working...had me drowsy at first. Now leveled off. Has anyone experienced any other side effects... Suppoed to be like another OXYMorphone used in the past. Outatime |

Opana is a long acting hydro-morphone, or you might think of it as a synthetic morphine or sort of like Dilaudid. It's just packaged so that it lasts about 12 hours. Glad to hear your pain is being taken care of, Bob. Good to see you. You've been sort of missing. God bless, Dan |

Opana(oxymorphone) is related to morphine in the same fashion that oxycodone is to codeine, is derived from thebaine, and is approximately 6? times more potent than morphine. The bio-availability of Opana is only about 10% vs. the 87% bio-availability of oxycodone.
From everything I've researched and from other people's personal experiences it sounds that that combination would be great for controlling your pain. It's good that it has leveled off for you. Be sure to just take it as prescibed and you'll be golden.
As far as side effects it's the same as any opiate, i.e nausea, constipation, dizziness (excluding vertigo), vomiting, somnolence, headache, increased sweating, and sedation. Opana really isn't too far up the opiate food chain from Oxycontin. The advantage of the Oxycontin is what I mentioned before, it bio-availability, which is basically how much of the drug actually reaches your system.
Sorry for the overly technical post, I've wanted to be in pharmacology since I was about 13 and am a nerd when it comes to the subject. I am not fortunate enough(yet) to have a good doctor that understands the importance of proper pain management and the effect on it has someone's life if nothing is done. It sounds like you have a good doctor, as long as it works for you stay the course. |
