My Doctor is talking about reviewing my chart on Friday and then taking me off the Wellbutrin for my depression and putting me on an anti-seizure med instead.  Does anyone know anything about this. Will I gain weight from these types of drugs.  Why is he looking at anti-seziure meds? He say they are a mood stablizer. He won't put me on an anti-depressant because he said he doesn't want me getting manic.  Just because I have a history of talking to fast and spending a lot of money at one point in my life he claims that that was a manic episode. Does anyone else take anti-seizure meds for anything like that.  I heard that anti-seizure meds makes you grow facial hair. No way will I take it if that's true.  I've just been so depressed lately and I,m having anxiety (sp?) attacks. I can't even get myself to the store and I need bread and milk.  I won't even walk up the road to my mailbox for my mail. I am so sad lately.  Will someone give me advise by the weekend so I have an idea what he is up to. I will probably see him next week or the week after, he is so booked up. Hugs LittleAngel

I take elavil which is a I guess you can call it a mood stablizer, I use to to sleep though, the Pain Doc I go to he said I have to sleep! It's an order so I take it 2 times a day...
I grow facial hair but I blame it on growing old...i'm 53 now, you can use the dug store products to get rid of it..also I don't gain weight from it.
They wanted to give me welbutrin to stop me fom smoking, I didn't take it though...I have heard a lot of people take it though and it works.
About gaining weight you made me smile because my lung Doc he put me on pregnasone, I told him I would take it for a while but not long only because it cause weight gain! He said Woman! thats all they think about!
About shopping I don't think it would cause anyone to have to go on meds! Honestly I think he better think of another excuse to put you on any med! But not for shopping! I think taking your wallet away would be better! I go on shopping sprees myself I think everyone does once in a while..
YOU TAKE CARE,
LOVE, SHELLEY

Dear Little Angel.
You didnt mention what he suggested, but to be honest with you, I take drugs for seizures and NO I did not grow hair, I did not get FAT, or have any other worries.  I have heard that Drs. are using those drugs for depression.  I don't know much about that part of it but just wanted to let you know that I am still the skinny "angel".... ok so I have a big butt now but that is from sitting daily!!  It is not from taking the drug.  Maybe your Dr feels you need a change from your previous meds.  Sometimes they do this.  Don't get yourself in a tizzy, it doesn't make for a pretty angel.  Relax, things will be ok for you.  Talk to your Dr before he gives you those meds.  Write down your concerns and bring the paper with you.  Trust me, it is ok to do, I do it often, and actually get commended about doing it!!
Take care
Angel

There are several anti-seizure drugs available for neuropathic pain.  One that's used often is Neurontin.  However, that's got several side effects that only show after long term use.  One is tooth loss.  Another is edema.  A third is dry mouth, which is what probably leads to the tooth loss and tooth brittleness.

I recomend Topamx.  It seems to work just as well as Neurontin, but it doesn't have the side effects.

If you're feeling depressed then I would think you probably need a different anti-depressant.  Perhaps Zoloft or Prozac or one of those would work.  Or, maybe this stuff my doctor gave me that's good for neuropathy too might work for you.  It's called Cymbalta.  The only side effect I've had from it is some somnolence the first few days I took it.  I also seem to be loosing some weight.  And that's not a bad thing.

Good luck sweetie.  You'll be in my prayers.  Let us know how it goes.  Don't forget to keep your pain diary.

Healing hugs and lots of love,

Dan

This just gets worse and worse. Now the Dr. had a Family Emergency and so his nurse said that she don't know when he will get a chance to review my chart because he is now backed up.  I doubt he is going to add any new meds he thinks I'm over medicated now.  A part of the story that I may have left out is my regular Dr. retired, he was burnt out bad, he was only in his early 40's, but any way I now have this new Dr. and we all know how long it takes a new Dr. to get to know you. This new Dr. is still keeping his own pts. and trying to get to know all the new pts. and my old Dr. had office hours from 9-5 four days a week and 9-7p one day out of the week. This Dr. is there 2 mornings from 8a-1p and one afternoon from 1p-5p.  The first time I saw him he was late seeing all his pts. and he saw me for less than 5mins. He listed my allergies and all the meds I'm on ordered a ton of lab work including an EKG, UA, and a chest x-ray. Then he shook my hand and said I'll see you in a month. Well I must of had fire shooting out of my eyes because he quickly changed that to 2 weeks.  But that's where I'm at so far.  I'll try and keep you all up to date thanks for caring.  Hugs LittleAngel

Oh dear.  You need to find a new doctor.  I can tell you that already.  Start looking.  Start asking around with all your friends and neighbors.  You need a doctor who will listen to you and help you.  You don't want an over booked "know it all" who is just in it for the money.  And that's what this guy sounds like.

Good luck, Angel.  Know we'll be praying for you.

Healing hugs and lots of love,

Dan

Hi Little Angel, I take anti siezure medication. I take Neurontin. I was a little confused as to why they were putting me on Neurontin because it is for Epilepsey and I don't have Epilepsy. But anyway it is really working well for me. I too have depression and they don't want to put me on anti depressants. That isn't the reason they gave me the reason was to deaden my nerves so that I don't have so much pain. Which is actually how an anti depressant works as well for some types of them anyway. The only problem that I have encountered with the Neurontin is that is isn't nerve specific. So I forget a lot of stuff that I would normally remember. But the Neurontin has really helped me and I have been on it for almost 4 years now. It hasn't made me gain any weight. The only time I have gained any weight is when I started having female organ problems and had to have a full and complete hysterectomy last May. I went from 115 pound to now 139 pounds. That is very depressing for me because I have been 115 pound ever since I was 17 years old. The only time that I have ever gained weight before was when I was pregnant with my two children. After I had each of them I dropped right back down to 115 pounds. I never got too big while I was pregnant anyway. The most I gained while I was pregnant was 135 pound and that was with my second child. My first one I got up to 125 pounds. Now I weigh more than I did when I was pregnant with my second child and that is very depressing for me. I have heard that there are a couple of Anti siezure medications out there that do cause you to gain water weight but I can't remember what they are.

Thank you
Gentle Hugs
Sharleen

LittleAngel,

I'm new here but I have cruising through the message boards. I am a good canditate as far as certain medication firsthand, I say that because I suffer from migraines and I can relate, of course this isn't your case at this point.  I was on antidepressants for depression, I looked up about anti-seizure causing facial hair I didn't find anything n your criteria, maybe you can find better luck by searching in WebMD.com.  Now about weight gain anticonvulsants meds it helps you lose weight and the Wellbrutrin does help you quit smoking as the others have mentioned.

I try not to act as if I'm a professional just sharing my experience, which varies from one person to the next.

Like Dan mentioned about neurontin it is help many other conditions, for me to help prevent seizures and migraines but I was taken off it because it wasn't working.  Now Cymbalta is a good drug for depression I liked it, but I had to quit taking it started to caused me to tremor, that was after taking it for about 6 months or so, I was upset that I had to stop taking it.e

The only meds that made me gain weight was Lithium for bipolar type II, it is a good drug and everything but I was so thirsty all I drank was water and nothing else, I hated the taste of coke, after going off of it, it took me a while to get used to other bevages.  I weighed more I was when I was pregnant with my son (10).

I hope this finds you helps, if you have any more help I'd be glad to help you out.

Love,
Andrea Monique

I have been on Neurontin for over 10 years, and other than my memory, have no problems.
