Hope everyone has a happy, healthy, prosperous 2007.  Sorry I haven't been around much.  The past few months have been extremely hectic.  We have been blessed with 2 new grandchildren this year, lost a couple of family members, dealt with some illnesses, and have had virtually no genealogy time in ages.

This site has articles about several disasters in our history. This particular page of the website talks about a tornado in Assumption, Illinois on June 7, 1907: http://www.gendisasters.com/data1/il/tornadoes/assumption-tornadojun1907.htm.  Other disasters mentioned include accidents, tornados, explosions, and fires, in Chicago, Decatur, Edwardsville, Palatine, Dekalb, Herrin, Mowequa, Waukegan, and Ottawa, to name but a few locations.

This family site had members who lived in Edgar and Perry Counties in Illinois. Too many surnames to list: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tqpeiffer/Documents/Locations%20-%20USA/State/ILLINOIS%20(USA)%20webpage.htm

Looking for a professional genealogist in East Central Illinois, particularly Champaign County? I have no person knowledge of this person, merely found the link: http://expertgenealogy.com/?x=wixwife.

This website is titled "A Short History of Englewood Chicago." http://people.virginia.edu/~mrs8t/englewood/

Happy hunting, Ruth

This was an interesting link, especially for Champaign Co. which most of my
IL ancestors seem to be located. But wow, a person has to have some serious
money for research these days.

Has anyone else noticed how much everything has gone up lately? Used to be
you could get a BC and a SSN Appl both under $10, now a SSN costs over $20
and some BCs are impossible to get at any price. If you want court records
those add up also, genealogy is getting expensive.

On the bright side, hope all IKK members enjoy a fantastic New Year!! Dave

I noticed the increase in prices a couple of years ago - WOW!  When we first started doing our research copies were anywhere from 25 cents to $7.00, depending on the county we were in.  The least we paid for certified copies this last trip was $15 and some were $20 and $2 for each additional non-certified copy.  I've learned to pay for one certified copy of whatever I need (and can find), use my own copier to make copies of it myself to use for our research since we may have to refer to it quite often, and store the original certified copy in a safe place so it doesn't get handled.  At $15 - $20 a pop, we can't afford to damage or lose them. Copies of microfilmed obits are still 25 cents at most libraries, but I still make copies of those and put away the first one for safekeeping.
