I am curious about how the school ceased to be,whether
it was lack of students,political-and how it became
an asylum.

Yank,

See message board: "School - Newz & Gossip!" (or for reasons beyond me it now reads: "School - Newz & Gossip!") Most of the rather unsubstantiated "facts", theories and gossip are summarized there. Also there is other stuff a bit randomly organized on other message pages ?BR>

Hi,

I was a pupil at Quantock, and then returned to teach in 1990s, I have the full inside story of how Quantock imploded, and I was actually (shamefully) involved in getting the ball rolling. I would be happy to tell the full story, but it would be nice for everyone to hear it. Those of you who left before Sep 1986 would not have met Dr. Peters, who is now part of Quantock legend, and it was his appointment that both lifted the school (initially), and lead to its subsequent downfall. The whole story would make an excellent book and film, and who knows what the future may hold?, but for the time being, the tale should be available for the few who were pupils there. Maybe, I could give it here on the site, or, better still, it could be told in the Library Annex during the reunion. That way it could be written and told by more than one person who experienced the whole thing. Besides, I do not fully know the events post 1993-1994, although I had insiders who informed me (Dave Peaster for one).

Let me know,

Lee.

Yank,
As far as I am aware it is not a home for asylum seekers, which is a bonus really, since they tend to burn them down over here!!.

Lee,

It would be interesting to hear the story although the delivery method should be left up to you.

I personally think that it would be best written down on the site rather than making it an event at the reunion.  The reunion should be left as a positive thing.  The story could rake over a coals and fuel negetive feeling about the school.  The story could be written down on the site and left for just the former pupils to read should they wish.  You can always fill in a few areas at the reunion should anyone wish to talk to you about it.

I hope all is well with you,

Regards

Marcus (Charlie).

Lee,

I agree with Marcus ... up to you if you want to post the full story here - but I think it would nice to have it in print for people to read ...  also this will  give people a little time to mull it all over and then perhaps even ask a few questions in the same thread!!

Mike

PS I'm not sure we have heard the the full ninja tale yet !!! Do you still have the outfit?

PPS Is your brother (Steve - I think) likey to joining this site?

LeeRoy?? as in Lee Rolland? if it is hello mate! last i saw of you was when
you left the army in style!!
i think that the whole of the 1994 year could help you out with the story of
how the school finished as most of us knew what was going on as well!
i still remember that lesson in Biology where instead of doing Biology we
went and watched Hamburger Hill because there were two peoeple missing from
the lesson.
as for the answer to your question i think that the story should be told at
the reunion with a few pints in one of the fields.
good to hear your still around.

I think that the full story should be written, so that everyone can read it!!
and then any questions anyone has can be raised at the reunion. I was asked
lots of questions by some of the authorities involved, so I've got a rough
idea of what some of it was about. I also know that the CPT File was 5 times
bigger than any other file held on the local schools. Lee I lookforward to
hearing/reading your story.

I've just heard that Richard Hope-Hawkins, and Mike Donnan played a part in the demise of Quantock.

Laurie,
I believe that it was Richard H-H that raised the spectre of abuse with the local authorities thus leading to an investigation.

Lee,

I think you should post the basic story here.

However, be aware that when talking about the living, libel is a possibility, so a little discression is wise, you could fill in any blanks at the reunion, it might also make sense to arrange a time for a chat session - things said will not be saved for future reference.

Of course, it is also possible to post the story and do so so making it clear that it will stay on the site for a number of days, after which you (the author) will delete it..

Regards

Allen

Lee,

As long as you do the story and try not to be too bias then it is one which would be well recieved. As I was on the opposite firing line to everyone else I would probably have a very different point of view. The final demise was a little to do with my big mouth and the good friendship I have with Mike Donnan and Roger Peters. I stress little because I think my conformation and anger at the information I told Peters was just one of the many thinks that happened in the same week for him and Donnan to put themselves on the line for the good of the kids at that school. We all knew what was going on and you were just one of about 10 teachers or more over the years who indulged. I just wish as a student there was something I could have done. They both walked in my GCSE year. The tail is one of folk law now! and you are right it would make an excellent film or documentary. I am just glad the majority of us live to see another day and are not too affected by the life that was quantock school. One day I shall have to tell the tail to my parents!

All,

Just reading the last couple of comments it would appear that there is a lot more to this than I first thought.  I await the story with both intrigue and worry.  What could have been so bad ? Did Quantock really delve to such depths whereby childeren were put at risk ?

We all know that the school has always had a few troubled children and the odd, strange, teacher or two over the years.  But there was always a line which was not crossed.  On the very odd occasion the line was crossed it was dealt with internally and swiftly (and I hope professionally).  Was this really the case I wonder or was there a darker vein that has always run through the school, only to surface in the 90's ?

Marcus.
