I've generated a "Member Location List" - the idea being that people can use this list to see who is living close to them !!!

I know it's not perfect as pupils do not appear as hotspots on the map, but at least the List is organized so that people living in the same general area should be group together i.e. the list is sort:

Country > Post Code > Town  > Class Of  > Name > With a link to their profiles

Link to "Member Location List" http://communities.msn.com/QuantockSchoololdBoyzandGirls/memberlocation.msnw

Any feedback, reply to this message!

Mike

This is a good implementation of the idea. However I don't think it's necessary for the full UK postcode to be given. These drill down to an actual street rather than being an area code (as I think most other countries' postcodes are).

There may be some Data Protection Act implications as well if you decide to use the full postcode?

Really !!!

Well we only really need the 1st two Letters to sort people ... I just thought whilst we are at it people could just give the full code .... but fair enough !!!

When you say "data protection act implications" is this still a problem if people don't mind giving this info (i.e. I actually give my full address in my "contact details") or am I missing something .... regardless I'll change it to asking for the 1st two letters of the Post Code

Well the DPA doesn't really deal with people giving up information voluntarily, it's more targetted at owners of databases that contain information that can directly identify people from the data in the records -however it was obtained.

It's all a load of b*ll*x but it's meant to protect yer minority groups, m'lud.

Or something like that anyway. Basically the fact that the data exists on a central repository that can be queried and used en masse is what matters. Anyway I dunno why I mentioned it really, since it's far too late on a Friday night to go talking about work-type things...

I found something on the web which might be closer to what Bri originally envisioned:

Have a play see what you think - but beware we might delete it again if it all gets ugly !!

Note - I can delete incorrect entrys, but I don't want to spend my life doing it so try to get it right the first time !!!!!!!!

Was wondering if there may be a footprint of my old computer on the system as
that would log on automatically without me having to type in a password,
could this be the problem, is there a way to reset this at youre end??.

Jools still not sure what your problem is, I think we need to speak to sort it out!

But can't you just hit the Sign out of .NET Passport sites button and try to log in under your new and or old identity. MSN really hold all the strings so I can't reset anything, and they never really sort out any of the these types of problems out - they just say "we are working on it "

When you sign on to this website there's a check box that says "Sign me on automatically" (or something like that). If you do that, it writes a little file to YOUR computer, called a 'cookie' that has your logon and password info in it. Some browsers like MS Internet Explorer will also sometimes 'helpfully' offer to remember on your behalf things such as passwords that you might type in.

Personally I NEVER, EVER select these options and I always tell my mates not to either, for exactly the reasons that you're experiencing now. If you always type in your password, you're far less likely to forget it, or you'll make a note of it somewhere. If you lose that cookie or change your computer, and you've not remembered your password, you've had it.

No consolation to you now, I know - but basically, if you've lost that cookie there's nothing that Mike will be able to locate for you to get your password back.

The other problem in this case is that the MS Communities sites don't have their own logon id and password system themselves, but use an MS global logon and password system for all of them (.net password). These cannot be administered by Community site administrators, so login names, passwords etc cannot be changed. All that Community site administrators do is set permissions to say whether you're allowed into the community site once you have successfully signed on to .net.
