This might be a big problem ... there is so much stuff on here.

They say the group can be move to Multiply, but who knows how well the transfer will work ... will all the messages, lists and photos etc move as well ... or just the membership, hrmmm!!!

I think before we move the group we will need to check out how good it is,  as we might after the move have the group zapped immediately so:
  • I think I/we will need to test it first to see how good it is (anything better out there?).
  • I think we will need to back up everything!!!! - that's a big job!

Who knows - it might be better than MSN - although I've just about worked out all the glitches now!

Mike

Hi Mike,
I set this up with my brother Ashley, so no problem setting up another.
It doesn't host photos as such.
Photos can be placed on "Photobucket" with a link embedded on the forum, so someone viewing the forum does see the photo and doesn't have to click a link (hope that makes sense).
Don't think you can make lists.
Laurie

OK - seems at least a hybrid sytem might work (maybe flickr for photos) - will try and move the abuse site in the next few days.

If we can get over the problem of how to cheaply (free?) host it, I think moving to a complete new website would be better if we can.

A forum management tool, such as phpbb, would be best to put on it as well. phpbb uses MySQL on the back-end rather than some esoteric storage method, so it's easier to manipulate as well, and would make it easier to automate the import of our existing forum stuff - assuming we can get it off the current MSN platform in a suitable format.

All the other bits would be easy to implement also; there's loads of off-the-peg PHP and other scripts to do all that sort of stuff, and in any case there are people on here who could code any specific stuff.

What about moving it all to Rick's site?

True - we have talked a migration to Rick's site for a while, maybe the time has come to go for it ...

Bri where are you based these days ... as my IT skills don't stretch to MySQL and PHP, it would be good if we could meet to talk about it sometime ...

Seems Multiply is not the only option:

Mid-november there is a new MSN group starting ... maybe this will have more features like lists ... however, it seems this might not allow data to be transfered ... are they using this transfer to clear out all the dead-wood groups??

We should wait till at least then ... again maybe if data can't be transfer to the new groups then multiply can at least act as a back up ...

Dear MSN Groups Customer,

As a valued MSN Groups or MSN Communities Web Folders customer, we want to notify you that the MSN Groups service will close on February 21, 2009 and you will have the opportunity to move your group to our new partner service, Multiply. We understand the importance of keeping your group together, so we partnered with Multiply to create a migration process that moves your group to their service to preserve your online community and its history. Read on to find out about how to kick off the automatic migration of your group to Multiply.

We realise this may be unexpected, so before presenting your options we want to briefly share why we've made this decision.

Why?
Because we are dedicated to providing our customers with the most current and user friendly technology available today we made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service. This decision is part of an overall investment to update and re-align our online services with Windows Live. In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative and effective services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about. We plan to launch a new Groups service in the coming weeks, but unlike MSN Groups, Windows Live Groups will focus on offering a place for small groups to collaborate. Multiply is available now, making it your best option today for continuing to share and communicate together online.

Options for moving your group to a new service
We've listed some options and resources below to help you decide what to do with your group.

  • Option 1: Automatically move your group and its data. We have established a partnership with Multiply, an online group and media sharing service so our users can choose to migrate their group to Multiply's service. Choosing this option is free and easy to use: Multiply will move the Group's content on your behalf and invite members to re-join your group in its new location. To begin the migration click here.
  • Option 2: Start again on another service. You can start from scratch and create your group on a different service but we recommend having your Group moved automatically by Multiply. This will enable your Group to transition easily and continue to enjoy the community you have created.
  • Option 3: Start again on Windows Live Groups. To further expand our mix of communications and sharing services, Windows Live will launch a new service this autumn, Windows Live Groups. We plan to launch Windows Live Groups to the public in the coming weeks as a service that helps small groups or clubs collaborate online.

Options for MSN Communities Web Folders users
If you use save files to the MSN Communities web folders (also known as "My Web Sites on MSN" or the web folder "My Groups"), these services are part of MSN Groups and will therefore will also be closed on February 21, 2009. We recommend that if you store files online using MSN Communities web folders that you back up these files locally, then upload them to another online storage service such as Windows Live SkyDrive. For more details on how to find and move files saved to your web folders, visit the MSN Groups Resource Center.

Your Next Steps
We have sent this letter to each MSN Groups user, whether member or manager. If you are:

  • A member or user of MSN Groups: Check with your group manager to determine whether they plan to migrate the group.
  • A manager: Visit the MSN Groups Resource Center to learn more about your options and consider soliciting feedback from your group members about what they would prefer to do, when and how. The Resource Center also provides a sample splash page you can use to notify your members that the group will move. If you're ready to move the group now, click here.

What to Expect between now and the closing date
Between today and February 21, 2009 the MSN Groups service will remain the same as it is now. We will remove the option to add more storage to your group but other features will remain until the service is shut down and you can use it the same way you do today until the date of closure.

Where can I learn more?
You probably have more questions, and that's why we created a website to address them. Please visit the MSN Groups Resource Center at any time for the most up to date answers to common questions, information about migrating your group to Multiply, contact information for our support staff, and important dates.

Our support staff are equipped to answer your questions and guide you through issues that may arise as you decide what to do with your group. They are ready to help so don't hesitate to contact them at MSN Groups Customer Support with your questions.

We thank you for using our services and regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Bri (anyone)

I've heard that Joomla! can be a good way to organise web content.

As I understand it, Joomla! is sort of modular so various admins could have access and rearrange content as they see fit (less quirky than trying to figure out someone else’s HTML code ) ...

I presume a message board (like the one L suggested) could be hosted within it and some sort of user editable database (i.e. a member details/contact list) and things like user editable reunions lists etc ...

Using such a system, some of the more web-savvy members can help with projects like how to have an automated application message to ask for ‘Quantock credentials?etc, maybe even save name and 'class of' to database (other details like email address to be added by member).

I’d like to open up the ‘management options?to those that can/want to help (committee) ?especially where I can’t do something (despite trying)

Ideas  ?

Joomla is good, but normally requires a webhost to store the content. That would mean a domain name, and a server to store the data for us. We could offload a lot of the content (pics etc...) to the free sites, but if we did have our own server, we could control storage etc...

Its not cheap though....

... would an old-ish laptop do the job?

Also seems that hiring storage is not too expensive  ...

You need a server that is permanently connected to the net, has enough storage and CPU horsepower to serve up the pages to everyone. Then you need the software. GoDaddy will arrange all that, and we can install Joomla for free.

Its a very good package, but as mentioned, this is not free. However, it would allow us to maintain a school presence that would totally be ours.

www.quantock-school.com for instance.

When I created my .com site I used uk2.net as a host server and Php MySql solutions.

It cost about 128GBP for two years but I obviously had to buy the .com first, also through uk2.net.

Regards, Nick.

Well I've backed-up the 9000 or so messages! Wasn't as bad as I though ... hopefully I've not missed anything!

 Now for the photos!!!!

Justy, can you save my life by sending me disk (DVD?) with the photos you uploaded to:

Downloading these will take forever, and if you send them to me on disk they will be at better resolution than downloading from MSN!

Speaking of which - anyone else who has uploaded Quantock photos to MSN can also send them to me on disk at:

Mike Blake
4 Bosville Avenue
Sevenoaks
Kent

I really love to get these photos on disk as they will be higher resolution than me downloading them from MSN ...

Fianlly, if for some reason you have Quantock photos but not uploaded them here yet, you can also send them to me at the same address!

Thanks Mike

As far as backing this site up, I'm going to try Yuku (better fun graphics) and Multiply (vagly associated with MSN so may work) ... lets see what happens!

Dear all

It is sad news that the Quantock School old Boyz and Girls (AKA the Quantock Community or even QSoc) is closing.

For reasons best known to MSN they are closing all MSN groups in about a week.

I am in the progress of migrating this group to two different websites, these are:

1) Multiply (MSN's preferred groups)
2) Yuku (which I like better, better messaging system)
... and there is a third one I'm looking at BigTent (looks good but has some faults)

You might get some odd messages from these websites in the next few days.  Hopefully you can join both sites and let me know which one you prefer.

If  for some reason both migrations fail, I have backed up the most important parts of this group ...

If you plan to join the migrated groups the same rules will apply:

 1 Give your name

2  Tell us the years you were at Quantock School

3   Your Class of year

4  Who was the headmaster

Let us keep our fingers crossed ... and hope for the best!!!!

Hope to see you on the other side ...

Mike ([email protected])
